What type of oil do you use in your R11S?

I know the discussion of type and kind of oil used in an R1100S was on this board a few weeks ago. On Saturday, I bought a new filter and filter wrench from the dealer. The gal at the parts counter said I should use BMW oil for my engine and that regular oil [or Mobil 1] would not work. It could damage the transmission. I recall a discussion on this list a short while back about this very subject. I looked through all 9 pages of past topics and could not find it. What oil do y'all use?

It's funny, I've also been told (at the BMW dealer) that you absolutely must use a motorcycle specified oil in the engine because it contains the special additives for the clutch.

Anyway, that's all BS. You can use Mobil1 Synthetic 15w-50 in the engine with no problem. The trans takes a straight 90w GL5, so does the final drive. I've heard you 'can' use the 75w-140 synth stuff in the trans, but not the final drive at all.

...you should go and look for a different dealer... preferably one who knows about the bikes they sell/maintain!

The transmission and the engine are separated with BMW Boxer Bikes... one would think they know that!

The "additive" issue holds true for the inline engines with integrated transmission and oil bath clutch, but not for engines where the tranny is separated...

As Sergio said... sometimes, he is right, actually!

I said: 'what kind of oil did you put in it?'

he said: 'Oil, oh no, oh no, I didn't know it needed oil..ohhhh..'

(after a person who bought a snowmachine from me way back when in Fairbanks brought it in after a week, all seized up)

That happened to one of the members here a while ago. He hadn't checked his oil in a while... engine sized. Dealer said it only had 2 quarts or so in it IIRC. Oil in an aircooled engine is blood.

OK I'll bite

I use Mobil 1 15/50 available at wall mart in the engine.

The transmission as already stated is separate, and I use Mobil 1 75/140 in it. The final drive gets 75/90 Mobil 1

Mykol,

When looking for old threads here is a tip.

If you look at the top of the page you will see a search link... Click on it...
Then click on advanced search. From there you can type in key words like "oil"
and you can also search by "user name" and you also need to scroll through which forum "R1100S/R1200S technical Forum" you want to look in.

The search function works pretty good now days, it used to have some glitches.

Hope this helps.

Bill

Thanks guys. I didn't mean to re-hash an old topic, but when the dealer told me I had to use "their" oil, I figured I better come back here where people [hopefully] know what they are talking about.

I honestly think any motor oil, as long as it is oil, will do. Really, has anyone ever heard of an engine failure on a regularly used & maintained m/c due solely to viscosity level of the oil used? I'd venture to say your luck is better at playing the Lotto.
