BMW synthetic gear oil is now RED (???)
(Oh, no, not another *oil* posting....)
But, seriously...I just changed the gear oil in my transmission and rear-drive. I had only a about eight ounces of BMW 75W140 synthetic gear oil left over from the previous change two years ago, so I had purchased another quart last month. I emptied the contents of the older quart into a measuring beaker, then started to pour some of the new quart into the same beaker, and...what the F*K?!?! The new gear oil was dyed RED! (The older oil is a "natural" gold color.) It was too late to do anything but pour 800 cc's of the mixed amber-and-red oil into my gearbox and hope for the best. My guess is that the red dye is just BMW's new way of differentiating their synthetic gear oil from their mineral-based oil, and that there is no other difference between the old and new oils. If, however, anyone is aware of an official BMW Technical Service Bulletin that reads something like this: "VARNING!!! EET IZ ABZOLUTELY *VERBOTEN* TO MIX ZE ULD-STYLE GOLDEN-GEARBOXENOIL MIT ZE NEWER RED-DYE-JOB-GEARBOXENOIL!!!! DOING ZO VILL DEEZTROY ZE TRANZMIZZION UND RENDER ZE MOTORZIKKL UNUZABLE!!!" ...then I'd really appreciate knowing about it. Thanks.... |

BTW, I caught a pretty substantial typo while comparing the old and new bottles of gear oil. It's on the back label of the old bottle--you can't miss it:
Front of old vs. new bottles: ![]() Back of old bottle: ![]() Back of new bottle:

They removed the part re: "oil consumption" on the new bottle.

Yeah, that was kind of wishful thinking on BMW's part....
Actually, no one really knows if the S actually consumes oil, since you get wildly different readings every time you check the oil-level sight glass. It's probably quantum physics in action. |

Looks like the bike on the front of the bottle is a R11S (touring bar version).
