Micro Swirl Edging
 

Has anybody ever tried this stuff? I am looking to cut a bit of the wind noise on my R12, and notice when I sit upright, and get my head in clean air, a lot of the wind noise goes away. Maybe this is the ticket..

Ear plugs are cheaper and the route I take. Too much loud noise in general while on a motorcycle anyhow.

Yeah but with the edging you will need eye plugs. ;)

It didn't work at all on my R1100s, and it was very fugly.

i tried it, didn't like it, ran it for about a thousand miles to really make sure.....then took it off.
caused more problems than it solved.

It is expensive, it is ugly, it is not easy to work with unless you have a windscreen with nicely contoured curves.

I found that it worked, however.

I put it on the stock R1100S screen and noticed a marked improvement. What I was looking for was less turbulance at +80 mph. It worked very well.

But, it looked like heck. For the 1100S screen you need to cut three pieces - top and two sides. Hey, I've done a little mitering in my day, I know how cut nice 90 degree ends. I never did get it right. It looked like slop.

I took it off.

You know the joke about "... it ain't rocket science...." Well, Saunders ("Saunders Engineering") was a rocket scientist. That's why his stuff is all about laminar flow and great stuff it is.

The edging works almost exactly as advertized and will budge the airstream 2 inches (but won't budge the rain and bugs quite as much for obvious reasons). It might just save your hearing. Hint: all you have to do is take your glove off and feel the location of the turbulent airstream to know it works.

There's no need to wrap the whole windscreen with the edging (and which of course can add to the frontal swept area, or so I would guess, and in places not desirable). So you can install a foot of the stuff only where you want the bump-up (up top, facing your head, eh). Granted, it won't win any beauty contests but maybe even more obtrusive when you use just a wee piece on top.

No one has ever made a more beautiful or effective fairing than the now-rare Saeng unit (which I installed on the stock fairing bracket on a 1984 RT) and I include Hannigan in that assessment.

Perhaps a bit pricey, but good quality materials and nice people run the company.

A friend of mine did this to his KLR to help control buffeting. Enjoy..

...if you want any kinda relief use the Laminar Lip.

Nothing reduces buffeting like a pair of BST Carbon rims, hahaha. Check out ebay (search r1200s), I'm surprised Shreddr hadn't already mentioned them, or did I miss the thread? =)

Do you use foil when you highlite your hair. It does reduce buffeting.

If you can sacrifice a wind screen you will probably learn what I learned: shorter is better. It's all about getting the lower edge of your helmet into "clean" air flow. I'm about to make the move to a neck brace, having decided that ANY turbulence against the bottom surface of any helmet is the major source of noise, and putting a neck brace up against that surface cuts off the flow of air in that area.

Hmmmm... I saw the BST rims. About $1500 less than the price in the local race gear shop, for what it's worth. Nice piece of kit if you've got money to burn I suppose and the lower rotating weight would, in theory, improve overall performance by a tiny (1-2 HP) but would especially improve dropping into turns on the track.

Of course, ordering fewer french fries over time would cheaply reduce total weight :eek: and lower the centre of gravity ... thereby providing much less costly benefits all round. ;)

Considering the alternatives, my Ducati 907ie had a laminar lip as factory standard and it worked very well indeed.
