ABS blinking
 

Hi All,

my 99 r1100s use to have alt abs blinking after a few days of non-riding(low voltage). It will usually go off when i restart the bike after some riding, always love to hear the 'shhh' sound when riding off knowing the abs is working fine.

Few days ago when i rode off, i noticed a louder then usual 'shhh' and from then on the abs starts to alt blinking once i turn on the key (usually it will blink together and only alt after i start the engine) and i couldnt reset it even after prolong riding... anyone have similiar problems.... I know the battery is dying but will this kill the entire abs pump?

99% sure a new battery will fix your problem.

for the reset of the ABS (note we don't have the reset button but there's a special note for 1100s on how to do it)


Or i've read yesterday that you could do it on the fly, basicly find an empty spot, no traffic, get the bike to speed, shut the engine, re-start it

Absolutely have to agree 100%.

I had the same exact symptoms and all was solved with a new battery.

I went with the dry cell Odyssey battery and have been much happier not having to check the water levels.

If your 99S were plugged into GT-1 diagnos the fault would read ABS Pump failure. With a new battery, and clearing the fault with the BMW diagnos. I can be 99.999% sure it will come back. It may fault as soon as you move forward enough to engage the system or it may happen 100 miles down the road. That louder than usual noise you heard is a sure sign the abs pump has or almost has died. New ABS-11 units cost 2137.11. We usually get ours from a salvaqe yard. www.cyclesrecycled.com or www.beemerboneyard.com. Aywhere from 3 to 400.00. You do have to change the electrics from the bad one to the one being installed. then you can cancell the fault. This is a very common problem with aging ABS-11 units. tjs

If you get alternating lights at key on, I don't think you can clear the fault just by installing a battery and riding, no matter what you do. Supposedly you can home-clear the fault on the S with jumpering pins and avoid the dealer visit, but I don't think it is very straightforward like it is with the GS.

As others have said, I'd get a new battery, clear the fault, and immediately flush the system with new brake fluid. Then keep your fingers crossed.

My '99 had similar issues - Here's what I did to it back in MAY2007...still working fine and no ABS Pump failure with 56K on it now. Ditto on the Brake Flush too.

I recently had a hydroplaning condition that caused my ABS to read a fault. The procedure for resetting the ABS computer on my 99 worked great.

Ground pin#2 in the diagnostic plug and wire into the backside of the specified ABS connector pin.

I switched on the ignition and grounded the ABS pin for 8-10 seconds until I heard a click and both lights stopped flashing.

Next time I engaged 1st and roll off from a stop the ABS self check was successful and I my brakes are operating fine.

Thanks for all the information..went to the dealer and plug intot the computer, the system reports pump failure... :(

Just an idea, is it possible to fix a R1200 ABS unit into a R1100S? THe newer ABS should be more reliable since its 3rd GEneration.
