BMW Roundel Handlebars on top of Triple Clamps R1100S Boxercup Cafe

I recently replaced the fork seals on my R1100s Boxer Cup Cafe. I also attempted to mount the handlebars on top of the triple clamps and ran into two issues:

1) there is a locating bolt that threads into the triple clamp to position the bar at the correct angle (don't think this is to much of a problem cause I could drill and thread the hole all the way through and run the locating bolt down from the top, looking for better ideas if someone has one)

2) The brake line from the handlebar to the distrution block secured to the lower triple clamp is to short. The line appears to be pressed (not threaded) into the distrbution block. I am not sure what to do, does someone make a longer brake line and does it come as a unit with the distribution block?

you can get a different distribution block and longer brake lines... PIA, though... but possible to make. While you are at it, you may as well switch to braided steel lines!

ABS?

Thumbs up +1 On the Braided Lines

I went the other way with my bars, but I believe the Speigler Braided Kits I mounted on my "04 are long enough to suite either setup. They're more concerned about ABS -or not. But braided and sintered is the way to go!

Remember that because your low mount bars "reach up", that they will mount even higher on top of the triple clamp and stretch the cables that much more. My top mount bars, swapped out below MOTOYOYO'S SUPER CLAMP, reach down all that much lower -as low as the body work will barely allow. I've had no problem with the bars not being tab registered in place -the clamps hold perfectly firm.

After I mount my Clip-On's, might you like a set of high mount bars? I might even have a set of seconds -cheep!

There are a bunch of threads on here that discuss what's involved in raising the clipons above the triple-tree, including the issues with the BCR. A quick search or two should get you a bunch of information to look over while you wait for more replies on this thread.

..ditto the steel lines, you'll need a longer line for a non-ABS bike anyhow if your going to go with anything higher (barbacks, etc.) than bringing your bars to the top of the clamp...

Thanks to all for the info! I checked out the Barbacks RD, nice work man! I am going to start with moving the bar above the triple clamps and see how that fits me, if that does not work, I will definitely be getting in touch, read through your info extensively.

I would like to get the steel brake lines, thinking about getting the 3" longer in the event that I want to use the Barbacks latter. Two things which are the best brake lines to get and can they be installed into the original distrbution block.

If I get the 3" longer line will it be to much to long and cause problems, i.e. rubbing on the faring or stanchion tube.

One last thing for those who use the Barbacks, how does the handling feel after you change over, are you still able to push it as far into the corners? Not that I am a knee dragger, however I sure do enjoy a good twisty.

Welcome, Reno!

Looks like your bike is a Grey/Mandarin Boxer Cup Prep. I'm not sure if that Prep was offered with ABS or not (I'm thinking not). How'd you find one with less than 1,000 miles? Many here have moved their clipons above the triple clamp without any issues with the locating screws. Somewhere here is a thread where a member fabricated a bar that connected the two locating screw holes in the clipons that served as a mount for GPS, radar, or whatever.

I was the one who made the bar connecting the two locating screw holes. It worked fine, but later I decided to fabricate some anchoring struts out of aluminum bar stock and had them chromed. It's a lot cleaner look. Some guys don't use anything, but to me the bar or struts are insurance.

total newb question - but is the top clamp different on this bike than other s's? - I purchased my bike with the Suburban Machinery kit http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=44271 and it seems to be a good buy for $100. I thought I would immediately remove them once I got the bike 'cause I'm oh so sporty.... ha, I guess I'm getting older (and more sensible) cause they feel great up there.

..top clamps are all the same, and you can move your bars to the top without the SM kit.

Reno,

Welcome.

I moved my bars to the top of the triple clamp with stock hoses and cables.

You need to reroute both to do so.

I drilled the stock mount holes through and threaded the hole all the way.

I then made some aluminum spacers that you fit with an 6mm allen socket bolt.

This is an easy but fiddly mod. I removed my top clamp as I did not have access to a 90 deg drill utherwise it can be done in situ.

Good luck.
