Exclamation oilage...anyone know?

...not sure where this weeping is coming from...anyone got an idea? It's not much, not even a leak, but I like to nip things like this in the bud...

jeez randy, that's an easy one.
it's coming from the engine.

interesting pattern with the oil swirls.
could it be that the whole gasket needs to be reborn?

well that would depend entirely on tire pressure, which tread patterns, the angle of the crown in your road, the weight of your wrist, aerodynamics of course, and you'd have to factor in what day of the week you were born, but i dunno, it kinda looks more like engine oil than tire oil.
besides, tire oil usually has that slightly blue hue to it, and i'm not seeing it in the photo.
and to drive that nail home, you're not a tuesday or sunday child anyway, which would rule out tire oil completely.

anyone else care to gander a guess?
i'm still holding onto my gasket theory.

snugging the front bolts all down cures this pretty often, as they do often loosen up a bit.
If not, then the gasket. Not sure front seal makes any sense here. Sure doesn't look like that.
Plus, it would still be getting by the gasket which would mean you still have a gasket problem.

Looks like an oring on top of the engine if you look at the parts fiche for the lubrication system/filters.. item number 17 on grid number 11-2795

http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47824

But many have complained of oil seepage on the R1100 units.. that was cured by tightening the cover bolts.

...FYI, the bike sat for a couple years untouched...maybe a dry-ish gasket ?
I'll torque them a bit...hmmm....wonder what the torque value is...?

A riding buddy dumped his R1200GS this past summer and there was also some oil in the same general area as yours...it was a blown front shock seal that dribbled oil on the engine.

...comes from the bolts and sweats on the gasket... as Roger said, tighten them properly, blast it off with brake cleaner and watch it... you'll know quickly!

There is also an oil temp sensor gadget on top of the engine case on that side.

...don't worry about that... the casing is very thick in that area... that scenario is very unlikely... you'd have to lay the thing down REALLY hard to crack the housing there... unless, of course, the PO has done so...

...well, not to create a ruckus, but he did have a 'lil get-off but the worst was on the left side, the right side had a nasty scrape on the valvecover, didn't really touch the crashbar on that side...
