Newbi needs advice on 'Winterizing' '04 BCR
I've done a search, but can't seem to find a simple checklist of things I should do to prep the BCR for winter.
If anyone would be so kind as to give me some pointers? Thank you! Sean |

the only "winterizing" I've done for mine was wiring it for Gerbings.

If you are not going to be riding it for a few months I think it would be good to put a full tank of stabilized fuel in it, and hook up a battery tender.

Change the oil and gear case fluids. Run some fuel conditioner through it. since it is 4 years old you should change the brake fluid too. Then remove the battery and keep it on a tender.

Also... a good coat of wax to protect the paint is a nice treat for your faithful steed.

If it's going to be in storage for a long period convert your insurance to storage. This can save you a great deal of money.

Thank you all very much for the replies. I hope it doesn't have to sit too long, but here in Kansas, it stays pretty cold til March. Its been -10 degrees the past few days with wind chill. I truly don't expect that I'll be able to ride until March, but believe me, any day over 40 and dry, I'll take her out!
![]() So, no need to drain the gas line? If I start it up one or twice a week, do I need a tender? Is there a "better" brand of fuel conditioner and/ or stabilizer you guys would recommend? |

When I used to store my bike, I changed all the bike fluids as part of the procedure. Do NOT start it periodically. This causes water to condense inside the engine and forms acids in the oil.
When you use stabilizer, you add it to the tank and run the engine until the stabilizer gets down to the FI's. Stabil has worked well for me for many years. I leave the battery in and on a tender. If you do this, you might want the check the terminals for corrosion in the Spring. If it's going to be sitting for a while, prop up the front of the bike so the front tire does not touch the ground. I don't like all that weight sitting in one spot on the tire for a long time. Cover with old sheets. Wax is also good.

Don't start it up once a week! That will be the worst thing you could do. These bikes motors can't take ideling for very long as no air is passing through the oil cooler or over the cylinders and the heads and cylinders will overheat. The catalytic converter can get so hot it can cause a fire. Yet the main block of the crankcase does not get hot enough for long enough to evaporate the moisture from condensation to burn off. This is bad and can cause many problems internally.
Spend the money now and get a battery tender. It will save you big bucks in the long run.
