Is There An Easier Way?

Looking at threads with lots of pix I'm always grateful to the folks that worked so hard posting the pix. I've tried setting up some half-a$$ ways with pix filenames in a spread sheet, copy/paste, to make it easier, but so far no discernable advantage. It's still a [lot] bit of work if you have more than 4-5 pix.

Anyone discovered some secret software, batch file, whatever, to do the work. E.g. Kinda like the old/but still available, drag/drop on SmugMug?

Are you talking about pictures on this board or a business project?

Posting pix on a website, such as this.

You're looking for an easy way to post pics on this website?

That doesn't make much sense to me.

It sounds more like you're trying to find a way to keep all of your photos organized and named in such a way that you know WTF file you're grabbing when you post it just by the file name?

I'm tlaking about not having to key in:

every time I want a picture from my photo server!

BumbleBeemer36 01-07-2009 07:50 AM

when you use Photobucket it gives you a list to copy from - one is IMG code. When you click on it - it puts the code on your clipboard. It works intermittently for me, not really sure why. Perhaps cause I'm a mac user.

If you already have the pictures hosted somewhere all you have to do is right click the image, look at the properties and then copy the address in full. Then paste that between the It takes about 1 second. You aren't typing the whole address are you?

Some are even more modern and use the little icon with the mountain. I just do it the way I'm used to.

jpalamaro 01-07-2009 08:00 AM

C'mon Craig, it's a lot more than one second, getting the URL/right-clicking, pasting into the [IMG blah, blah. 4-5 pix not a big deal but some of these really neat threads/posts, such as a trip report, it's just a PITA and seems that there might be some easier way.

Not that big a deal, but historically I'm always amazed at some of the 'stuff' floating out there as tips and techniques.

ckcarr 01-07-2009 08:08 AM

Seriously, I really don't know how much easier it can get. Getting the URL is a personal problem. Open two windows, or three. We all do it.

If I have a longish report I now write in MS Word, like a trip report first, and copy the addresses into the Word document. Writing in Word first protects me because I have had experiences with the Internet in general where suddenly the site is gone and so is my post before it gets published. Or, more than 10 images and it kicks it out. Or, I don't want someone jumping in and commenting before the report is complete so I mark two or three positions in a row, then fill in with sections of the document. So doing it in Word first allows a backup if that happens.

People do devote a lot of time to crafting the good threads with images, they don't just create themselves.

there really isn't an easier way.
you either copy/paste a URL or you upload from your personal confuser.
a lot of thread posts with numerous images come from camera, to computer, to bulletin board (if the size isn't too big).

if you copy/paste from another URL, it cuts down on wayne's bandwidth costs, but there's always a chance that the image (if it's not yours) could disappear.

speaking of disappearing images, is jeff williams out of pelican jail yet?

For posting images you've already got hosted somewhere, the little button that looks like a postcard with the mountains on it and the stamp in the upper right corner will generate a dialog box with the HTML needed to embed the image in your post. You don't even have to clear the "http://" that appears in the box when you paste in the image URL. I use SmugMug and I see no way around opening the album to be able to right-click on the image I want to display here.

If you use the "Post Reply" button, the "Click here to Upload a Photo... link works easily for images you have in your computer. When I transfer images from my camera memory card to the computer, I name the files with some unique name that will remind me of what shots they were. They come numbered automatically. When I process them I put an extension such as "_1024" to let me know it's an edited image and its pixel size on the long end. If you upgrade to Windows Vista, little thumbnails of the image appear when you open a browser window to upload an image.

I've mentioned this before, but when you use Pelican to host the image, don't have the original more than 800 pixels wide or a filesize over 100,000 bytes (97.65 KB), or it'll get re-sized/compressed, often resulting in serious image quality destruction.

He should be soon. Originally charged with Indecent Ghey Exposure, he plea bargained down to Internet Silliness and got home detention for 10 days. He also has to attend a Cops in Shorts sensitivity course and is on Ohlins clicking probation for 12 months.

bradzdotcom 01-07-2009 08:29 AM

yea, he called and left a message, begging for bail money.

as is traditional, i ignored it.
i figured the ohlins clicking probation will probably kill him anyway, so why should i be out $17.34 in bail money when he doesn't appear before judge wayne for sentencing?

Steve Carlton 01-07-2009 09:04 AM

Next time in is his third strike, no?

bradzdotcom 01-07-2009 09:39 AM

only if you count the iowa incident, but i think he paid off that farmer to make it all go away.

Steve Carlton 01-07-2009 10:04 AM

Oh, yeah. That Farmer's Son incident...

bradzdotcom 01-07-2009 12:13 PM

no, the other one.

Steve Carlton 01-07-2009 12:19 PM

The John Deere thing? I thought that was dismissed...

bradzdotcom 01-07-2009 12:37 PM

um...well...um...actually....um...no, i...um...this is the first i've heard about a john deere one....

Steve Carlton 01-07-2009 12:54 PM

Oh dear.
