I've bought a cluster, probably from the same vendor in the UK on eBay. Deal completed last Friday, and it should be on the way to me now. I had initially decided against that set because it looked like the speedo was calibrated in mph only, but it looks like there are kph markings on it as well.

I checked the tab on my frame and it's good, but I don't think I'll do any more heavy pulling on the bike. My replacement sub-frame should be here before long, and hopefully I won't need to do much adjusting on it.

Progress is being made! Got a slightly tweaked front fairing sub-frame in the mail last weekend, got the seat sub-frame tab welded last week by Johnson's Welding in Ottawa, and today the instruments I bought off eBay UK arrived!

Awesome - a brand new set of Boxer Cup instruments, and they cost me less than $200 delivered.

I have ordered Touratech Hard Part LA R1100S Yellow - Part Number: 040-1306 - to fix the slight problem with a broken steering stop, then the next thing to buy will be tires, unless something unforeseen comes up...

Woohoo! Gonna have to start assembling now!

I've been really busy cleaning up after a "Mighty Wind" blew through Ottawa a couple of weeks ago and downed a tree in my brother's yard but that's finally done and I can get back to important stuff.

Valve Covers Interchangeable?

This is a bit late since I've already purchased it, but is there anything which would prevent me from using a non-magnesium valve cover on my bitsa "S"? Reason I ask is that I found (and purchased) a valve cover off eBay which was described as a R1100 engine cover, and listed in this category: eBay Motors > Parts & Accessories > Motorcycle Parts > Asian > Body & Frame > Windshields

It is from a single spark model, so I think it's going to do until I find the right magnesium one.

So aside from weighing about 300 grams more, is it interchangeable?

The price was certainly right.

not to be a dick or anything, but why don't you just look at em and see if they are the same. i doubt the alloy it's made from is gonna make any difference.

You're right, but I thought if someone else knew right off the bat from having done the switch, it would help. Thought perhaps different cam lift might have meant differences in the covers, etc, but I should just compare them.

Thanks anyway - I'm going to buy a nice sticky set at the first track day I do next year. The ones on the bike right now are "rim protectors" only. But you bring up an interesting subject I'll have to research: which tires to get when the time comes.

The only planned use for the bike is track days at the moment, but if I need a change from the F800GS, the S may end up on the road.

Here's my current ride.

Making Progress, Slowly

Still working on my R1100S wreck - but getting somewhere now. Bought a couple of fairings from Beemer Boneyard, but it's going to be a challenge getting the slightly tweaked fairing mount to line up.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_ALop5GyosGA/S6...0/SANY0893.JPG

Couldn't get the same colour but not too worried about looks for now. Kinda like the yellow, but I'll work on that later.

Couldn't find a headlight for it so I was forced to order one new, and it has arrived.

Bought the Touratech steering lock device as one of the stock tabs was snapped off.

Anyone have any ideas on how best to line up the fairings? My son suggested a Park Tools handlebar/subframe bending tool as a way to tweak the mounts, and I may just try that. Looks like the tabs are about 3/4" away from where they need to be.

Still need mirrors, handlebar weights, and a few other ancillaries...

Getting interesting, though.
