Rear Brake Caliper - Help?
I need some help with the rear brake caliper on my 2004 R1100S. The rear brake caliper appears to be stuck/hung up on the slider pin/s. I have read other threads where people have talked about cleaning and greasing the pin/s. This was done to free up the caliper, allow the rear caliper to slide on the pin/s, and the grease would keep the pins lubricated as well as help prevent the problem from reoccurring.
However, I am not sure what pins to clean or how to get to the pins. There appears to be a rubber boot covering a couple of the pins. Do I remove the boots or??? Photo's would help. Also, what type of grease should I use? Thanks for your help in advance! Jeff |

Just to let you know, I haven't done this since I haven't had a problem, but from looking at my 04BCR here' what I believe you need to do.
I believe the pins you want to clean and lube are on the locator/mounting plate, the silver aluminum plate which has the 2 mounting bolts holding it to the rear drive, as shown in the top drawing. 1. Spread the brake pads and remove brake from the drive unit. Remove rear wheel to keep from damaging paint during cleaning or whatever. 2. Remove pads by pulling keeper (1) from retainer pin (2). 3. Slide the mounting plate (silver) away from the caliper and unhook rubber boots from grooves in the brass guides. Don't remove the rubber boots. 4. The caliper should slide free from the mount, though you may have to work at it if really stuck. I wouldn't unscrew the pins from the plate. Clean the pins and plate using brake cleaner as needed. Lightly lube pins with high temp disc brake grease and reassemble. You only need a thin film of grease, since it's mostly to prevent corrosion and provide just a tad of lubrication. I'd also change brake fluid and re-bleed since I'm in the area. Good time to replace pads, if needed. |

I believe the rubber boots referred to above could be replaced (?) ...see part 9 in the following link. If pulling apart anyway...might as well replace them...

The pins to be cleaned and lubed are the #2 pins noted in the blown up illustration of the rear caliper. These pins need to be clean and free of corrosion or rust in order for the brake pads to smoothly release once you let off the rear brake. The rubber covered pins should be cleaned and lubed as well. You may need to rebuild the caliper if the pistons are sticking. Get someone with brake repair experience to help guide you.
