Rear while drive unit leaking oil

Hi guys

So I had to remove my rear wheel drive unit to replace the rear rubber boot, but now the drive unit (what I call the diff) is leaking oil. I did not drain the oil when I removed it, and the manual says that if you don't keep it upright whilst it has oil in it, there will be a suction effect leading to an oil leak. My question is, will draining all the oil and then refilling it with fresh 250ml gear oil solve the leak or do I have to do something else too? Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of the suction theory, but there is a vent at the top. If it got tilted when you were moving it around some oil may have accumulated there and poured out when you righted it again. Can you tell where the leak is coming from?

Like Jim said it may be coming from the vent. Clean it up check the level and ride it some and see if it continues.

Given the history of final drives on BMW's (I've had 2 oilheads and replaced/repaired the FD on both), I would have it rebuilt by someone that know's how to properly shim them.
Anton Largiader rebuilt the one on my 2001 R1100S.

Thanks for your replies guys. The following is from the repair manual on page 33.5
"Note:
Do not lay oil-filled rear-wheel drive on its side prior
to installation, as this will cause oil to escape when
the motorcycle is on the road (suction effect)."

It seems the shaft seal (part number 33 12 7 663 482) needs to be replaced. Will post pics shortly.

The shaft seal is clearly leaking

I thought it was the drain plug initially

Well, that answers that question. Now you need to pull that big seal and see what's going on behind it. Sometimes those seals leak on their own. Sometimes the big bearing behind the seal comes apart and destroys the seal. Drain the final derive, then put a few small screws into that seal and pull it out. It will be obvious if the bearing is bad. Good luck.

Just curious, but how many miles are on your ride?

Turns out the bearing packed up and cut the seal. Oh well. It's sorted now. Thanks everybody for your responses.

Well, that answers that too. They usually fail at around 50K miles if they're shimmed incorrectly. If you put it back together with those shims it will fail again in another 50K miles. I think there are YouTube vids floating around on shimming the final drive correctly. Good luck.

Thanks JimMoore. I had it shimmed at a reputable BMW mechanic here in Cape Town, South Africa. It's all good to go!
