BMW S 1000 RR headed for Canada.
Élite BMW supersport motorcycle to debut in late 2009.

BMW Canada is pleased to announce that the BMW S 1000 RR supersport motorcycle will arrive in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2009.
In development since 2007 and currently competing in the 2009 World Superbike Championship in full racing trim, the world debut of the BMW S 1000 RR will establish a true milestone in the supersport motorcycle category.

Combining an all-new high-performance engine with lightweight construction, sophisticated chassis dynamics and race-engineered brake and suspension components, the BMW S 1000 RR will set a new benchmark for ultra-high performance motorcycles - on both the racetrack and the road.

The 999cc water-cooled, DOHC, sixteen valve four-cylinder inline power unit is brand-new from the ground up, bred for racing, developing a maximum output of 193 hp at 13,000 rpm (rev-limited to14,200 rpm) and maximum torque of 82.5 lb-ft at 9,750 rpm.

With overall weight of just 204 kg including fuel (183 kg dry weight, 206.5 kg with Race ABS) the S 1000 RR will also take its place as the lightest motorcycle equipped with ABS in the supersports category.

The combination sets a new standard in its class with a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.05 kg and, respectively, 1.06 kg (2.31 and, respectively, 2.34 lb) per horsepower without/with Race ABS.

The new BMW S 1000 RR has been designed not only to compete in the World Superbike Championship, but to takesits place among the élite of supersports motorcycles.

"Innovative exhaust system with interference pipe butterfl ies for optimum power and performance.
Made completely of stainless steel, the exhaust system featured by the S 1000 RR is designed consistently for optimum power and performance. It works according to the 4-in-2-in-1 principle with four individual manifolds of equal length fi rst merging into two pipes beneath the engine block and then extending into a large-volume pre-silencer. From there the exhaust emissions flow through a very short and dynamically designed rear-end silencer to the outside.

A homogeneous power and torque curve ensuring optimum rideability is acknowledged as the requirement for sporting performance on the road and fast lap times on the track. Precisely this is why the exhaust system featured on the S 1000 RR comes with two fully controlled interference pipe butterflies housed in two connection pipes for the two outer and two inner manifolds, in the immediate vicinity of the exhaust ducts. As a function of various parameters such as engine speed and the position of the throttle butterfly, an adjuster opens or closes these flaps, allowing exhaust gas to flow freely between the two manifolds or, respectively, interrupting the flow of gas. This coordinates the sequence of oscillations in the exhaust gas mass flow, reducing exhaust gas counter-pressure at the decisive point (like on a racing muffler) and increasing the cylinder charge accordingly.

This factor alone makes a signifi cant contribution to the very high standard of
homogenous overall performance offered by the S 1000 RR."

Thanks Dean. Quite an explanation of what makes this thing run. But no heated grips or 12V accessory plug or bags and I'm sure the mirrors will only provide the rider with an excellent view of the inside of his elbows.

So.....note to self.....don't be too annoyed when new buyers yack on about this.....remembering that not all with funds are worthy.

I sure do want one though. Wish I had the talent to use it.

The latest info that I have is that the price in the US is to be within $1K of the Yamaha R1. Don't have a clue as to how equipped at that price.

it sounded impressive but i'm not so sure it has stood the test of time from an owners perspective...

Interesting link, on the + side it looks like they have really thought it out, they are offering up lots of CF parts and an Akrapovic titanium and CF muffler tip, which will negate the need to jettison the entire exhaust if it was even possible. It looks like there would be a lot of pieces haningn in midair if you went that route. Of course for me the most telling bit of info is the many times mentioned "compact" nature of the riding position. No matter how much I like the looks of this bike, it would probably won't make for a comfortable ride. SO I guess I can breath a sigh of relief at not having to consider it.

Pretty clever concept - but a trade-off of complexity for power. Introducing mechanical mechanisms upstream in the exhaust is asking for maintenance.

Are they calling the exhaust cross-over pipe an "interference" pipe?

The R1100S has a baffle with a 1 cm hole in the front exhaust cross-over. Opening this brings up the power at low rpm. But reducing the hole size brings up the power even further at peak rpm.

Does anybody know if there is a baffle in the cross-over pipe on the R1200S?
