OT: NJ Park Ranger

I was out riding today and took a break at a state park in northern NJ. I was getting ready to get going when I saw a park ranger pull in the parking lot and parked right behind me, blocking me in my parking space. I was thinking maybe he thought I was speeding on the park roads or something, ( I wasn't because they were full of pot holes). I was wondering what was up, and he gets out of the vehicle and says "hey Bud" I said "hi, whats up?" and he starts to tell me he saw my bike from a distance and thought it was beautiful. He starts asking me questions about the bike, tells me he has a 78' Honda, and a friend has a Dakar model. He was noticing my rear tire was worn and was asking how many miles I got out of one, and noticed my vanity plate and laughed, and then wishes me well and I get going. He was about 25-28, full ranger, had a gun, and it freaked me out a bit. When he got back in his vehicle he moved off a bit and then sat there. I was thinking he was running my plate or something. Am I paranoid, or do these guys do profiling? I was thinking he thought I was gonna be blasting those backroads, and now if somebody sees a bike like mine going too fast in or near the park he will know who to track down. Do these guys have all the same data access as LEO's or are they just toting guns in case a bear gets out of hand?

Sounds like he doesn't need a gun.... Intimidation seems to work pretty well ....

'had a gun, and it freaked me out a bit'

Dontcha know, now in Fortress America, every clown with some kind of badge is armed; every little agency gets DHS funds to build a SWAT team. It's totally gone to their heads.

Of course, you could live out west; here everyone is armed so you won't feel so intimidated. Every one of my riding friends rides armed; I wouldn't think of leaving home unarmed. It's just the way we roll...kinda like HuDu

since he bothered to tell you what he rides, i'd bet the farm he was actually interested in the bike.

I'm never sure why it surprises people that a LE guy might be a gear head of some sort... i find that by and large, cops as a community love wheels... we do get paid to drive around.

but he probably ran your plate anyway...

I used to have a 240Z Datsun that was fairly customized for it's day. Cut shock towers, Pirelli P7s, turbo...got stopped by a CHP one morning between San Diego and Tijuana...he didn't write me (although it would have been justified), he just wanted to know what all I had done to the car. Turns out he just bought one for his wife and wanted to play with it a bit. They aren't all bad guys with guns...

maybe that's why he was looking over my rear tire, he wanted to see if it matched the tread marks on the buzzard!

Yes, your only hope is to mount a giant plastic buzzard replica on your bars to scare all of its kin away since its said that they don't even like each other. Otherwise you could be nabbed as a serial offender. Merely giving them a hard time is also not a proper thing to do. We have a conservation cop around here who would seriously be a problem given your recently aquired reputation, so better stay away from central Illinois too.
