One of my customers arrived today... Driving a pearl white Cayenne... He had a trailer hitch on it, and a big flatbed trailer, for me to load his ATV on. I thought of you.

I do love the West! So much so, I left NY in the dust to come here, almost 30 years ago (28.5 years to be exact).

Albeit, our top speed limit is 75 mph here. That 80 is probably Montana.

That is a "test" section of I-15 south of Salt Lake City but north of I-70. I didn't know Utah was so progressive.....

Bill, it is a fine vehicle for high speed transport....that section at 80mph limit gives me a bit of comfort by narrowing the margins a bit from 20+ over....

Montana used to be "Reasonable and prudent" but they went to 75/65 I believe. (75 daytime/65 nighttime)

Yeah, but much like Wyoming, most troopers don't too excited unless you're 10mph or so over. Even on our 65mph two-lanes, everyone drives 70-75. In fact, a highway ticket in a 65 zone doesn't even count against your drivers license here until it's over 75.

At night, though, the boys take the speed limit real seriously...way too many big critters on the roads. I avoid night driving as much as I can because of all the elk, moose, deer, antelope, bison, cows, horses, etc. who seem to love to stand int he middle of the road in herds.

Part of I-10 in west TX is Speed Limit 85 MPH. If you have driven it you know why.

Back roads in Utah are only 65 though.

yeah, I saw that 80 mph "test zone" sign last weekend. Only problem is a 1/4 mile later it's a construction zone. By the time the construction is over the test section is over. Repeated that pattern several times before I got to Salt Lake.

It actually went quite well. I asked if he minded if I took a pic but he did not want to be in it.

After he pulled me over he was looking over the bike and asking me questions about it while I took off my gloves and helmet. He asked for my license, then asked where I started, I showed him my route on the map on my tank bag. Then had asked some more questions about the bike, and said he did not know that BMW made "crotch rockets, just big dirt bikes." He used to ride a SV-650, said it hurt his wrist and showed me a scar where it looked like he had surgery on his left wrist. I did not ask for the details.

Then he asked for my registration/proof of insurance, and went to the car to run me. A few minutes later he came back and started asking more questions about the bike, exhaust, and how fast it would go. He had told me he clocked me doing 80 (I had slowed) so I said, "according to you it will do at least 80," he laughed and said he figured it would probably do a lot more than that.

Then he said unless I wanted to donate about $100 to the county I should slow down, handed me my stuff, and waited till I left. I thanked him and he said he was letting me go because he liked my bike. He did wait to hear what it sounded like.

I think 75/65 was repealed when 55 national went bye-bye.

Wifey finally got a speeding ticket, after being stopped before and let go with a warning, 71 in a 55. Cop wrote her for 61 in a 55, and prosecutor reduced it to a failure to obey a traffic control device, end result $150 fine and an $85 State surcharge, for a grand total of $235. Got to love how they supplement the town an state budgets.

bring back the good old days when they'd take your driver's license and "escort" you to the end of their county.....where there would be a cop from the next county waiting for the torch/license passing ceremony.

or even better:

which got me rummaging around.
here's a little video snippet of jeff "wheelie boy" brooks on a central coast ride (NOT a triple crown event).
couple of interesting things in it:
notice how when i got close it screwed up his balance. everytime i got within the bubble behind him, he'd get more aerodynamic, and start to loop out. i think this was our third or fourth try at getting it right.

also, at the end of the video you'll see a white car, wheels locked, sliding off the road shoulder.
that's the local cop.
somebody...names withheld because they rhyme with things like ivan, tuna and jose...and their friends had just blasted past at z-rated speeds.

those front runners were never caught but lucky us, we in the back got to revel in a stern talking to, and we were the ones that didn't run away!
( i particularly like the cop's swaggering walk when he arrives to start the lecture: "Ya all boys aren't from around these parts, now are ya?"

See.....I was so frakkin' paranoid on my Tahoe TC ride as the BoyZ were in fine form....watching jeff is very impressive but i was constantly scanning the skies for the plane I was SURE was following the extended high-speed formation. Running is all well and good if'n you got's a gixxer, know the terrain, don't live 1200 miles away and have someone close to bail you out.
I KNEW I wasn't paranoid..I was just paying attention.
