R1200S rear sticker help

Howdy,

I put the clear Wunderlich branded protective film on my bike which covers the upper part of the rear fairing on top of the R1200S sticker.

Is the sticker sitting on top of the clear coat or is it underneath? I cant really tell with this clear film over the top.

Has anyone removed the stickers and found some tricks in aiding removal?

TIA

I just went and looked. Mine doesn't have a sticker.
Carry on.

It's a decal, not a sticker and there is no clear coat over it. It sits on top of the paint.

So I could put the hair dryer on it and heat it up and it'll peel off?

BMW are charging $685 for a new RHR side fairing, painted. I didn't ask if that included the decal or was something you bought and stuck on later. Now it looks like you just pop it on the top and it's probably additional which is fine.

I am thinking about removing the clear film, removing the decal and getting the damaged bit smoothed out and resprayed, then chucking another decal on - I don't like saying decal, is decal American? do we say decals over here? I always say stickers - whats the friggin difference? everyone knows what I'm talking about don't they?

Yeah, so was hoping that the sticker wasn't underneath a clear coat as that would prolly negate any $ advantage of getting it fixed and resprayed.

It still might be easier to get a new one, but then I've got an old one...

...so to answer your question, I don't know what I've got planned really

Decal or sticker the one thing I wanted to emphasize is that it's on top of the paint, not under any clear coat.
So when you peel the vinyl off, the sticker may come with it or it may stay-if it comes off, you can easily order another and reapply after your tail section is repaired and painted.
Over here, a decal usually requires some sort of moisture to loosen it from the backing paper rather that a peel and stick sticker.
It has the appearance of a decal but it may very well be a sticker-I'm not quite sure-but I am sure it's not clear coated over.

Jon,

If the only damage from the drop is what is visible in the picture, I would take the side panel to a good paint shop, and see if they can fix it without taking the sticker off. The paint is fine up there and they may be able to blend the paint along the edge of the bend in the panel. If they can't do it you could have them peel it off and get a new one, not sure what they cost but it is probably not a lot. Check out ebay.de, I saw some black side panels on there the other day, not sure what it would cost to ship to OZ though.

edit,

The sticker costs $47.03 according to the parts catalog at maxbmw.com

Be sure and remove it counter clockwise down there...
It's the opposite as how we do things here.

According to the BMW parts fische the r1100s was using "stickers", the r1200s uses "lettering."

They must be right, they are German after all.

Yep thanks Rob and that is the only damage, though you can see a little knick right on the edge of the clear film stuff. That's OK, It'll just have to come off.

I know a guy, he painted my valve covers and...I'm his postie - I think we can come to an arrangement. I lose a few bills, tell him what's going on with his neighbours...he gives me a good deal Or - I put a stick of Geli in his letterbox and blow it to smitherines or maybe even send the neighbourhood dogs around at 4am every morning to wake him up...something like that

I can be a little ambiguous in my posts, sometimes when I re-read my stuff I don't even know what I'm on about. I have at times in the past been a nit picker and a whiner and pedantic and negative - it's not really me. I think people see through that stuff. It's easy to feed off other peoples vibes.

So if you learn to read between the lines with my stuff and get the general drift of what I'm trying to say ~ as most of the other guys here have learnt to do with me - we'll be fine.

Just remember to read between the lines OK

$685 for the one panel? Yikes
I was wondering what it would cost to get all the plastic in a different color I.E. black just for a change. Looks like I'll just get the 996

(\threadjack)

*oh, and ouch@chewie.....* LOL

You've already got the candy stripper - your eyes will hurt just walking into your garage if you get a shiny red Duc too

...why don't you search for a 'new' part on eBay...?

...something like this : http://cgi.ebay.de/BMW-R1200S-Verkleidung-hinten-rechts-schwarz-neu_W0QQitemZ370198801828QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorr ad_Kraftradteile?hash=item5631916da4&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1229%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A2%7C294%3A50

(these part is new, btw)

...geez..., 47 dollars for a 'sticker'...! (we also call it a sticker ; it's a common Dutch word... )

Ron, I tried to translate the page and it wouldn't. When I go to e-bay and type in r1200s I don't get much stuff.

I would buy them for $250 eu - how do I do that?

and if rixster gets to them first there's gonna be trouble
