Western Australia Border run
 

There is an annual meeting of riders on the first Saturday in August at the West Australian and South Australian Border. 2952 kms in four days.

Did it last year on the 1100RS and had the 1100s for four weeks and took it this year.

Where are you from?

I have never heard of this. Sounds good, wouldn't mind doing something like this.

I am in Perth WA and this event is not advertised you just get in the know as there is no forum. It is held on the first Saturday in August every year and this was the 33rd event.

Nice one Graeme. How do you like the fuel range with the 'S.

The RS was ok for about 400kms and this one the light comes on at 228kms. Probably doest affect me as much as you think as we need to stop for fuel on these runs regularly as there is always a risk of power being out in the next place.

Does the S use more fuel? I was geting 5.2 lts per 100kms out of the RS this one is more like 6.5lts per 100kms but I seem to ride harder on it. I blame the Remus system lol.

Difficult, I think, to find one without a Remus, or at least a Staintune, over here. I have the Remus myself, and like the deeper tone.
Do you find yourself sliding forward on the seat?

Best I have had out of mine (with stock exhaust) is 320ks and it took 17.8 litres to fill, so wasn't much left. I normally try to fill up after 200ks. Now have a Vanderlinde exhaust and chip and it uses noticeably more fuel.

Anyway, looks like a trip to aim for next year. Somewhere around 5000k return trip from Sydney.:eek:

320 Ks = 1 kilometer = 0.621371192 miles = 198.83 miles

1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters = 4.7 gallons

42.3 miles per gallon.

4.7 gallons at $3.05 = $14.34
That's cheap entertainment.

Just a little more expensive for us, but as you say, cheap entertainment.:)

Yes when a bump is hit forward I bounce. I can do about 700kms before the seat is uncomfortable tho and actually in standard form is better that the RS for me. The RS has sheepskin and bubble wrap under that for long runs. An Airhawk seat cushion seems the way to go from those that have them.

Thats what I was thinking on the trip for the fun I had no problems justifying the cost.

KMoore A lot came from over that way so you would have company and the bike of choice at the Border are BMWs.

I fitted the Pannier Rails yesterday so will be better set up now for touring.

A fantastic bike, it keeps up in the Perth hills with fast modified suspension Japanese bikes and in seconds can be a tourer.

I'm from WA though now reside in South East Coast of VIC, never heard of the run before either, though maybe I erased it from my memory as it sounds like numbum sorta stuff :D

I was a Postie based out of Midland, lived in Guildford and worked as a relief, being sent all around Perth but usually The North and Eastern parts if I wasn't delivering Darlington. Might have delivered your mail at some point :)

Chewie, you're from WA and never heard of the Border Run. Back in the day, the real BMW riders used to do it in 2 days.
It was about 1980 when I was first told about it by a friend that had a BM. I think the idea was to set off on Friday night and ride through to the Border, some 1400km, and meet the SA riders for a coffee, then turn around and head back home. I thought, "These BMWs are not only wierd, but the riders are even wierder".
Graeme, yes, I do find I have the slide forward problem, which is worse when I am wearing my touring pants. In jeans it seems a little better, perhaps because they may have a bit more 'traction'. I have to have the seat re-covered this week, so I might ask the upholsterers if they can do something.
Or maybe the Airhawk will fix it. Can anybody confirm?
I know you from several other sites, and would like to catch up some time. I'm thinking more seriously of the Lake King ride in September. It is rare to see 1100S's over here, so maybe 2 out of a possible 15 or 20 bikes, may be a record.

Have to catch up with you as there are very few bikes like ours here. I did see one a few months ago riding on Scarborough Beach road, silver I think from memory and sounded so good I had to have one.

Well I'm curious regarding the repressive speeding and traffic laws I read about on this board in Australia.

It seems that there's no advantage having a powerful, fast, motorcycle in the land of Oz. Other than pride of ownership (not that there's anything wrong with that). Chewie's Honda 50 probably goes as fast as the law allows? Or are those traffic laws only applicable to certain areas? How could you restrain yourelf and not lose your license? Perhaps I've read wrong.

Graelin - I live in the hills, off Great Eastern Highway, though I like to use the back roads. I'm working in Leederville.
I have also only seen a couple of S bikes in the 8 years that I have owned mine. Surprisingly, a couple of months ago, I found myself splitting the traffic with another red one.

AZ-Twin - Thanks. I even used some weird spelling. Probably because I touch type and my fingers automatically put the 'i' before the 'e'.

shreddr & ckcarr - The west is pretty flat, and not exactly a sealed road motorcyclists ambrosia, but the east and SA have some good stuff, but nothing like the best of what I have seen in the 'States. I haven't been there, but Tasmania is a great place to ride, and NZ is also said to be great. Take your wet weather gear for both.

Yes, our traffic legislation is rediculously oppressive, but fortunately it is rare to see police on the road.

I would add, that oppressive traffic legislation is spreading around the world, and is something we should do more to fight against. Trouble is, the only answer is to highlight that the real problem is sub standard driving by the masses. That's not going to lead to a happy result, as much of the masses will never be able to drive well, even with training. This would have a devestating affect on the economy, and we all know that the economy is more important than human life, freedom, and justice, so we will have to put up with unjust laws.
