Roger, Spam Threads to delete

To Help out, here are some spam threads for your deleting enjoyment Roger, not sure how much time you have to read every thread on the PPB, so this may help with the housekeeping.

Not trying to get into your business, if this bothers you just ban me like you did GotRoad. :D

Bob, I agree, Brad is very funny, and I play in these threads as much as anyone, but they still house links that most likely contain spyware that someone could click on and get infected. I say, trash the threads.

Bob Hancock 12-08-2009 01:18 AM

Yer right of course Rob. I was just sayin'....hate to lose a brad funny.

Steve Carlton 12-08-2009 04:55 AM

IIRC, Roger tends to leave the funky threads on here when we respond to them. What I do is click on the red triangle with the "!" in it (below the signature line) to report the spam.

I thought that meant I was low on fuel. :)

Honestly, I had never seen that before, will use it from now on. Thanks Steve.

Historically true. Lately, I"m just trying to chuck them, but I can't seem to keep up. Ugh.

bradzdotcom 12-08-2009 06:48 AM

it's not roger's fault.
many of these types of intrusions are done using "bots" or robots, which scour the web for vulnerabilities.
not sure how many people are unsavvy enough to actually click on some of the links, but most folks know better by now.
i always suggest the following scenario if you're unsure:
make believe you're a wanted felon, hiding in an unoccupied house.
there's a knock on the door. "UPS special delivery for you!"
do you open the door?
nope.

in a lot of cases, if you DO follow through, there's a chance you can actually invite and house a "bot" on your own computer, which goes out and looks for forums like this one to continue the bizarre postings.

fortunately, the software for this board is a whole bunch better than some others. i've shut down two bulletin boards completely in the past, because they were so totally infested and we couldn't plug the holes.

roger does a pretty good impression of the little dutch boy, but keep in mind, he also has a job on the side.

AZ-Twin 12-08-2009 07:03 AM

I agree 100% Brad, it is a game of whack a mole!

Bob Hancock 12-08-2009 07:08 AM

Thanks Brad. I still hate to lose those few lucid moments I have when I laugh out loud at one of your funnies. Loved the reading in a mirror upside down...cookies!

bradzdotcom 12-08-2009 07:22 AM

bob~
sometimes i reply to them as a way for others to realize it's all a bunch of crap. other times it's just to get a giggle and warm up the fingers. i know i'm responding to a post that the original poster won't come back to visit, which makes it extra fun to try and get something posted before roger comes by to vacuum the thread off.
i watched a complete melt-down on one bbs where a bot infection was posted. the thread went on for pages of comments like "i clicked it, nothing happened to me, you guys are paranoid".
a few weeks after the thread was pulled, there was a new post from a known member, with a link & instructions on how to kill the virus. almost as many people posted with "yea, i got it too" as did the original nay-sayers who claimed we were just being paranoid.a most of those links come from "code kittens". they're beginning hackers without much knowledge, preying on computer owners who click on anything.
wanna fight some big battles? i've been at war with sql server injections for the past two years. those things are exceptionally nasty and a lot more sophisticated.

not to worry ralf.
Top 10 Work At Home and Home Based Business Scams

"In the 18th century, for example, well-known celebrities of their day, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin, were tricked into playing against what was purported to be the world's first chess-playing machine. They lost.

In reality, a chess grand master was cunningly concealed in a cabinet beneath the board, manipulating the pieces into what looked like automated moves. "

Ralf,

I thought you had pretty strict rules about now working on week days, and not surfing on the weekend.:D Plus that stone age barter system seems to be working well for you. Did you get your buddy's internet working at his restaurant?

Wayne 962 12-21-2009 12:27 AM

I've added more words to the spam filter that applies to new members, hopefully that will help make a difference. I'm not sure why these guys tend to target one forum and not others - it used to be the 928 forum, now it's here. I think there's some type of automated robot program that has a site profile built-in or something like that. I need to change the questions that are asked on the registration process.

Roger could spend the evening deleting the SPAM but moving the responses to an OT thread entitled "Funny BANNED thread responses". Of course he'd have to sell off his business -all play anyhow- apply for welfare and let the bank repossess the house and put the kids up for adoption. Forgot to ask Roger, do you have children? Other than Ralf, Jim, Bubba and a few others.:D

roger albert 12-21-2009 07:34 AM

No, 5 nieces and nephews, and and an S.O. with a 16 year old daughter. And sometimes this place. That's quite enough thankyouverymuch

wayne~
yes it is and yes you do. i've chased those before, and various variants. i have one now by the tail that uses "tell a friend" or a dealer locator to gain entry.

do you have a character capture function on sign-up? ya know, that thing that tells you to type in what the squiggly letters actually say?
if not, that's probably where they're getting into your site.

here's more vbulletin specific info: How To Make My Forums More Secure

can't help much more because i don't do php.

Yep, and I commute on the bike. Thank goodness I got a set of them Dunlop D220STs. I get 19K miles out of a set, the Gold Wing guys wish they had it so good.:)

RBMann 12-21-2009 12:17 PM

Jeezes Rob, how many threads do I have to look at to see all the places you are dissing me? It was a tech question, sort of.
