GPS Install, Round #2

I had a Garmin Quest on my R12S which ejected on a high speed bump and was no more. After Garmin refused to let me use the software I already owned on the replacement unit I bought without paying $100, i decided to go with their competitor, TomTom. I picked up a brand new TomTom One 130 for $75 on eBay, and decided to go with a stealth install rather than one of the abomination Ram mounts available. These units don't have a lot of function, but I just like to know what roads I am on when I am chasing Cageyar across western Pennsylvania! It doesn't matter to me that its not waterproof, cause I don't ride in the rain. I also got the hardwire with it, which is phase 2, but should be pretty simple. The pics tell the story:

You are not going to be happy with Mr. TomTom. You can't see it in bright sun and the vibration causes the screen to shutdown requiring you to find the reset button which is hidden under a sticker. Been there-done that.

Jeff, you get what you pay for my friend. I now run with the Zumo 550. It's made for motorcycles.

Perhaps you could mail him the custom, one off, reset device I fabricated for you at TOR?

What's holding the cradle onto the ball? Does it just snap on? If so, you might want to tether it...

Here's my Ram Mount solution: Garmin Nuvi 500 (waterproof, battery powered) on Heli bars.

I found a spacer, and cut-off a bolt that would screw into a Ram Mount Ball. Simple.

I tapped a hole to accept the bolt.

they can't all be like that because they make the Rider unit. Which TomTom were you using?

XL one comes to mind Jeff. I know it wasn't made for a bike. It just couldn't take the vibration associated with the top clamp. You need to find a way to dampen out the vibration. The rider is built to take the vibration.

Sure. For $75.00 you can afford to experiment!

I got three years out of my cheap Nuvi 200 before it finally shook apart, and it was money well spent.

My Zumo 660 is great, and far better and easier to see than the 550 I sold off.

How are y'all using the GPS? I basically use it as an electronic roadbook for things I doctored up in the comfort of my house behind the computer. I never ever use the built in (routing) functionality of the device itself, except when I need gas. It is not allowed to recalculate, as when I deviate I do so on purpose and I will find my way back to the original route if/when I want to using the map.

TT seems to be really popular in the US, but the limited capability of the total package makes it completely useless in my application of these GPS thingies.

Makes me wonder if my use is so different from everybody else.

This is my "GPS".
I use it when the route is long-fits at least 20 pages stapled together, it's wireless, it's immune to vibration, and it mounts securely to my left arm.
Cost me $10:

Cool. Now, what about when you have been having fun, you're in the middle of nowhere and no roadsigns and you don't have a single clue as to where you are. If you are lost like that, how do you use that device to get back on track?

I have been blessed with a pretty good directional feel and I can navigate using the sun etc, but a lot/most of people don't.

I'd say your device is a bit limiting and you get what you pay for.

...well Gijs ; it's very simple...

...when the fooks around him all start to speak New German, he'll probably be in New Berlin... (the center of that map)...

...and when everything is blue beneath him ; he must be in Milwaukee...

...you're only used to the sun and the GPS ; but such an 'old school' map is pretty easy to work with...

All the roads on that map a far too straight to worry about riding anyhow. Those must be for a K-bike.

TM, I usually pull out a Gazetter and have a word routewritten out on the tankbag. Turn by turn. The map is in the bag. My 550 des enable me to plan back road touring routes and then load them in from the laptop puter.

TM,

I use my GPS on the street bike to see where I am at if I get lost, it is usually in the tank bag, and if I need to look at it, I pull over, turn it on, look at it, turn it off, put it away, and then proceed. My primary routing device is a map on the tank bag. We have a lot fewer paved roads out west than most places though, so it is hard to get lost if you are still on pavement.

When riding dirt, i prefer to have it on the bars and capturing tracks so when I get home I can download the tracks to the computer to see where I have been. After a failed attempt to go somewhere (blocked by fence, canyon, aliens) it is nice to look up the exact location on google maps and see I was close to the cow trail I was supposed to be on. Lightfighter usually does our dirt navigation because he likes to do that, he is good at it, and as long as we stay in southern AZ instead of northern MX, I am fine with where we are at. Plus he has a GPS and I have none right now . My little Garmin GPS broke about a year ago, hoping Santa brings a new 60CSX.

I have a Navigation system in the truck and it is nice on trips because it tells info about the next exit and stuff like that, but on a motorcycle trip I am in a different mindset and don't want an electronic tour guide.

I have been thinking about a spot device since we ride in some remote areas here, plus on trips it might be nice for the family to look on-line and see where I am.

I have a Nuvi 660 in a Ram. It's not m/c recommended but i keep it dry and it works fine with gloves. The best feature is a FM receiver in the power cable that gets (nearly) real-time traffic and weather as well as gas prices. I finally installed my Powerlet outlet in the top triple clamp which keeps things tidy. The traffic is not always current enough to avoid the slow down but at least gives me some planning (or explanation) most of the time.

I have the separate FM receiver that gets real-time traffic hooked up to my Zumo 660 (and MSN for it in the car). Both work very well in my area.

Traffic as a feature is great, too as the unit calculates all routes taking traffic into consideration. Going to the '09 MOA rally in Tn, it re-routed around Little Rock.
