Rear caliper wear from Hugger?

Hi,

At my recent service the mechanic noted that there was excessive wear in the rear caliper causing uneven pad usage.

He reckons that the Ilmberger Hugger thingy that I have is the source of the problem and has shaved the hugger where it mounts with the caliper so that they are not touching.

He reckons that this is a common problem with after market huggers....

Any comments anyone?

Hi,

Interesting (albeit annoying) I haven't seen anything of the sort on mine, but mine doesn't much rub, so who knows. I'm not sure how that wear would be related to uneven pad wear (mine wore quickly, but evenly, with the hugger having been on the last 80% of the pad-set's life)

I'll double check mine this even and see if I can provide better feedback.

What about you other Ilmberger owners?

roger

As long as the caliper is free to move with the Hugger on( just grab it and wiggle[ it's fun! ] ), then I would look elsewhere for pad wear.
Some other BMW Lists[ R1100R/RT ] complain about ( to them ) premature wear also.

jeff
thinks the rear caliper is great for keeping the rear disc from rusting...

I have the Ilmberg hugger too, and my brake pads are wearing
down rather quickly.
They were down after 10000KM and I do not use the rear brake very much.
The caliper does not move from side to side, so yes it could be the hugger.
Anyway, I will have my dealer look at it, and if he has a solution
I will post it here.

Now you've got me wondering. I don't have th e hugger and I have almost 30,000 kms on mine with the original rear pads... I'm going to have to have a look.

Snake Oil!! I put my hugger on before a new set of pads and in looking at them (very recently) there was minimal wear for 4000 miles of useage. I think there are some factors hear not being addressed. i.e. rear brake useage, severity of useage etc......

Thumbs down

Replaced the pads at 19k mi. worn out, the local BMW shop says this is normal. I'm surprised since I rarely use the rear brakes. BTW I do have the hugger.

Hey Joe, thats about what I got outta my first set. Did you get all kinds of brake dust spitting out onto your rim with the new set of pads. I sure did and it sucks!! but then the K-Caddie does the same thing. Which due to design I am always using my rear when engaging my front. Link me up scottie!!

Hi,

I'm a fairly light user too, but managed to finish mine off in only 12k. It suprised me. I suspect I use them a bit more than I'm conciouss of. My dealer seemed to think replacement by 15k was normal and that I wasn't much ahead of the curve, fwiw.

People who are concerned about the wear & also use a ( Ilmberger ) hugger, I suggest removng the offending piece of kit, and ride 10kKm-ish –*then report back to the list as to what you have found out.

jeff
will keep his placebo, thank you...

Pat

I had these black splotches all over the rear wheel for about the first 500mi. it seems to have settled down now. Anyone know of harder compound pads since we don't need a lot of braking force on the rear of the bike.

BTW I have over 80,000mi on my 77R100RS rear brakes not even half worn.

Brake Pads/Hugger

I've got 22,000+ on mine.....probably going to get the front and rear replaced
before I take off for trips starting in the Spring.....I'm not running a Hugger at this\
time....as always, I wait on Roger's R&D....
I'm surprised BMW didn't add that little bit of protection for the suspension
system.....knowing what dirt and grit do to moving things.....
Looking foward to more input......

I tend to use a lot of rear brake and changed mine at 8000 miles. The hugger I use is not attached to the caliper at all. I did note that one pad had worn more quickly than the other, but this is apparently normal on a sliding caliper.

Hey people;

Lets use our heads here,If you take the Hugger bracket which is the same diameter and you put two bolts though it and torque it, it isn't going to make a dam bit of difference.Your Mechanic is blowing smoke up your ass

They did add a "little bit of protection" -- that's why we're all buying huggers! :-D
