What's Our Group Age

Someone mention on one of the post to do a age  poll . I'll set it up with mostly 8 year spreads. I'll set up a poll for years of riding experience later. Any other ideas please comment below.:p

roger albert 11-20-2001 04:21 PM

Hey Joe,

You know it's possible your non-unique end points could confuse some of the 38 years olds (or 31 or 45 or...)

:)
roger

jclark 11-20-2001 04:26 PM

Um, based on trips 'round ol' Sol, or how mental we may be...?

jeff
I'll take two Thorazines, and try to see me in the mourning...

Joe 11-20-2001 04:29 PM

Roger

I see what you mean, could be a young 38 or over the hill. We should get some idea of group average anyway.

roger albert 11-20-2001 05:12 PM

Oh well, I'll just enjoy the intrigue.
A boy's got to have his secrets.

Raven 11-20-2001 05:28 PM

Aren't we getting just a little bit personal here?

Here is to the over 40 crowd http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Rapt 11-20-2001 05:41 PM

I dunno about the rest of you, or your groupies but my groupie is 25.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/ace.gif

On a more serious note
Interesting that we are getting such a uniform distrbution about 45. Its really not the classic bell curve thats the surprise, more just curious fact that the mean is what it is.

ckcarr 11-20-2001 09:23 PM

you probably have to be in your prime earning years to get one of these puppies new.

What's Our Group Age

We have a wonderful friend who comes to our regular meetings of the Gutter
Gang at Lone Star in Austin on Thursday nights, 4-7 pm.....Ardys turned 69 this
birthday, and finished her fourth Iron Butt. Quite a feat for a great grandmother.....
but once you meet her, you get a sense of adventure and pleasure that can be
enjoyed simply messing around on bikes.....
She was also probably responsible for me going for the S over the RT' or the GS.
I kept thinking I'm getting too old to ride a radical bike like the S, or KRS....too
uncomfy.....now, after installing a Corbin Saddle, the bike's very cush, and I plan
on putting a ton of miles on it.......seems like the more you ride, the younger
you get..
Going to be rough at Lone Star after 1 December......Mike Darnell retires from
there that day.....which is going to put the whole show into a quandry........
Mike is still Mr. to most of us "elderly gents"....but we do try to get the
steam up and get some miles on out in the beautiful places......
Mandarin is so fast, it takes an awful lot of years with it.....
My mother always told me I'd end up hanging around "those bike ruffians"
way too long.....
It's always been the grandest company!!!!

roger albert 11-21-2001 06:23 AM

Hi all,

Rapt, I'm curious. What were you thinking the average to likely be? I was thinking just over 40, maybe 42.

Niel, yeah, it will be a different game after Mike the Mechanic retires. I considered him a bit of a mentor. He was always supportive for double checking problems I had difficulty solving, or facts I wanted to verify before publishing an article.

We should think of something to get the guy.

Rootboy 11-21-2001 09:09 AM

Personally, I thought it would be around 42 as well (my age!) Nice job on the poll....you could go wild with something like this... color of bike...add-ons...milage per year, etc.Great idea

johnty288 11-21-2001 11:17 AM

All right, I give.....how do you "vote"? First it tells me I need to log in (which I then do), then it tells me I'm having an invalid session(!). BTW I turn 49 in 8 days.

Andrew Stemp 11-21-2001 11:20 AM

I love that last option.

Rapt 11-21-2001 11:43 AM

I didn't really think about what I expected the average age to be. Possibly a bit younger since its got to be close to BMW's youngest appeal model in spirit.

I guess I just have to resign myself to being one of the young'uns.

jdlowery 11-21-2001 12:37 PM

Wow! BMW is a geezer's bike.

Gromit 11-21-2001 01:28 PM

I'm 20 with a riding age of 36... hang on...

Oops I was always crap at biology

Jenny 11-21-2001 01:38 PM

Hey, I'm one of the youngest people here! Gotta love that!!

Jenny http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif

dcollins 11-21-2001 01:57 PM

And I, even younger. I sometimes find it hard to touch the ground when I wear my diper ;)

Hey does anybody know where I might find some kind of a handlebar mount for my baby bottle.

Rattus 11-21-2001 02:02 PM

I guess at 29 and 12 months (hehee) I am a bit of a whipper-snapper here too! So young yet so wise in choosing an S... <insert applause here> hehe

Jenny is young and teensy! YAY!

Don in Oz 11-21-2001 02:33 PM

:D Well at 43 I thought I would be one of the old farts, but it seems that there are plenty of us old farts that ride the "S". Must be the little boy in us coming out. As for my pillion (Marion) we celebrated her 50th last weekend. Yeah... she wanted a toy boy.
:p

Neil Paterson 11-21-2001 03:30 PM

Ride magazine said the average age of S owners was 45 in their survey so I am below average again!

Must try harder or get older.

Neil (34 and a half)

Steve Br 11-21-2001 04:47 PM

An average age of 45 would put me well above average! Its no wonder my old dirt bike knees bother me after a couple of hundred K! And thats with lowered pegs! Cheers Steve Br

tigeraaron 11-21-2001 07:46 PM

I must admit that I thought the average age would be much younger as well. I am 27 and bought the bike new at 26.

lennie 11-21-2001 09:56 PM

Well I am a spritely 42 and a little.

The older I get the better I was.

Regards,

Lennie

Addie 11-21-2001 10:07 PM

Darn, I've always hated being average.

716MP 11-22-2001 01:58 AM

Age Poll/Pace Maker Guerilla

One great thing about bikes.....young or old, the glue that holds us together is
all things motorcycle related......the bikes I started on are now classics in the
Guggenheim.....wish I'd kept all of them......silly to think my S is faster and
handles better than the bike Mike Hailwood rode to victory at the Isle of Man in
1961....and here I am on a board with "whipper-snappers".....but who share a
similar passion....and if we meet somewhere on the road, will have a lot in common.....
Another nifty thing about being a gray muzzle.....helps to get you out of tickets..
on a trip out West in June, I was stopped in Arizona for speeding....middle of
nowhere......outside Show Low.....when the trooper asked me if there was a
reason I was going so fast, I said yes....there were thunderstorms all around, and
I was trying to get away from them, because I have a pacemaker (Split-Fire
Ignition).....he said he'd never heard that one before......I asked if he wanted to
see my scar....showed him my card (good for going through security at the airport
after you trip the alarms).....told him there would be a lot of paperwork if I cashed
out there......he wrote me a warning ticket, and said he'd better not catch me
again....
that hasn't always been the case.......now I'm older than our president.....
but not older than Mike the Mechanic at Lone Star.....who's retiring so he
can go riding!!!!
A thing I've noticed over the years.....when I look at my inner circle, of
friends who I'm tight with.....they all ride....some fly, some sail, some are into
scuba diving.....climbing.....surfing......but all of them ride....
just exactly the sort of folks my mother always warned me about....
and the very best lot to throw in with, no matter what age.....

Raven 11-22-2001 10:30 AM

Addie I'm with you, being average sucks!!

All things being relative, I still can't figure out why those youngen's can't keep up with their fancy sport bikes!!

"Aging is required, growing old is optional":p

I have been riding since I was a teenager. I have no idea what I'm going to do for mid life crisis? Buy a Harley? Young girl friend? Ah hell I need to go for ride and figure it out!! Watch out kiddies!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

I say trade in the wife (if you have one) for the young girlfiend. Worked for me.
:D

BoopGirl 11-22-2001 01:37 PM

Well... no wonder there are no pillions posting "only as young as the man I feel" :o

Regardless of what age we all are.... we've all got the same smarts to own an "S" :D

I just look forward to the day I'm capable of riding one of these darn things myself

Hmmm, methinks a younger girlfriend... it may work out 'less
expensive' in the long run! :D

Gary.
(only as young as the woman I feel - I should change my vote! ;) )

lennie 11-22-2001 11:55 PM

Age is but a state of mind.

Regards,

Lennie

ErricZ 11-23-2001 10:06 PM

Bought mine brand new in May of this year, turned 25 two months prior. The younger S owners are a surprising minority. Just have to keep riding to get there I guess! :)

andros 11-24-2001 10:00 AM

OK. now I'm pissed...Who's the other 25 year-old?

YAHBO 11-24-2001 05:43 PM

BillRad 11-24-2001 07:09 PM

Working a few bids on e-bay....nice Bose system new in the box for $300 to $400 less than lowest retail. Hope that receiver has enough testicular fortitude (watts) to drive it all (haha).

Every time I'm on my S I feel 25....does that count or am I still 40...Damn!

Ssssusan 11-27-2001 03:53 PM

Notice a few Aussies in the group....

Hey you Aussies....

Ssssusan here in New Jersey, USA. Got a ticket to Sydney, Australia for Jan 30, 2002 - Feb 27, 2002 to visit my brother and his family. Can't Wait!

Wondering if you know of any place to rent a beemer for some of my time there?

I too ride the R1100SA - black of course. Bought mine Sept. 99 (it's 26 months old) and have 69,685 miles on it at the time of this post. : ) Just in case you are wondering about my riding...
Oh, and in response to the age thing....I turned 44 in Oct. Been riding about 3 1/2 years, never was even on a bike before that.

Hey Ssssusan, why go to Australia, when Canada is so lovely in the winter?

Rattus 11-27-2001 08:32 PM

Hi Sssssusan hope you manage some ride time in Australia. Renting a BMW could take a bit of looking around. I found one site you might want to have a look at http://www.rentabike.com.au for the sake of reference as they have BMWs but they are not in Sydney...

A site in Sydney but looks like they dont do beemers:
http://www.bikescape.com.au/rentals/rentals.htm

May I suggest you try your luck with doing a search on www.google.com and submit a search with a format like this to restrict the matches to sites in the australian .au domain

motorcycle rental site:.au

I'm checking out some more sites and if I spot one with BMWs in Sydney I'll post a msg.

Have Fun,
Rattus

PS - click on this to bring up a listing of bike rental places from the australian yellow pages online http://www.yellowpages.com.au/yp/search/business_type_results.jhtml?breadCrumbLevel=0&brea dCrumbString=&categoryId=9000132&categoryName=Moto r+Cycles--Hire+%26+Tours&parents=&pLN=&commName=motorcycle+r ental&pState=&pArea=&pSA=false&pMetroArea=1&pOther Area=&pDays=&pHours=&pBrand=&pPayment=&pP=&pIA=&pS howZoned=true&searchType=refine&isSuper=
