Oil filters
What everyone using for oil filters? I'm to cheap to keep buying OEM after the warr. has expired. Would not an R1200R or GS filter work? The K and N filters are not much less $$. Perform does not list anything. I found a internet site that says that a Purolator PL1024/PL25230, Mobil 1 /M1-102, Bosch 3330 and a Walmart/Supertech ST 3614 will work. But I can't validate the information. Can anyone?
THANKS BobL. |

You opened a can a worms with that question!
Wait and see what happens next! I will just say that I have 91K on my bike and I'm a cheap ass! Don't tell anyone, but, I don't even use BMW oil ![]() Lets not even start on the K&N air filter topic! Good luck dude ![]()

Can of worms is RIGHT!!!
I have 64K Miles on my '99 R1100S and have always used the BMW P/N: 11-00-1-341-616 Oil Filter Change Kit. As far as I can tell Mahle is the supplier and they're made in Austria. And I'm cheap too - but not when it comes to OEM Oil Filters. On the other hand I'm using Fuchs Silkolene 20W50 Engine Oil - Fuchs is a German Oil Company by the way.

I've been using Ol' Roy's Re-Re-Filtered oil (69 cents a quart) from 7-11 for the past 2 million miles on my S, and save even more money by removing the guts from a stock oil filter and using Dollar General paper towels every 50k miles or so. Plus, I get free spark plugs you find by the gross outside car repair shops, maybe a little rusty and corroded but perfectly serviceable. When I hole a piston, J-B Weld does the trick.

Its going down hill fast but they say it does roll down hill. Hey the Frantz filters do work. If fact I have quite a few about the garage. I just got tired of installing and removing and the extra service. But back on the spin on OEM. BMW does not make filters, or oil. So you can get OEM or better manufactured else where. Consider getting a tool like the one below to open up your filters. Good for inspection. I do it on every vehicle. It will allow you to physically see the construction and filter medium. You can make your own decision. K&N make a good filter as does Hiflo. One I am really impressed with is made by a company called Filtec for Honda. Need to see what else they make. The 05 R1100S filter does have a bypass valve. More of a safety feature than any thing else should the filter become clogged. Helps keep the oil flow up to speed when the oil is cold as well. When something is not understood completely folks tend to trust the manufacturer more than there own common sense. Remember use only "XYZ" oil, transmission fluid, coolant. Couldnt be they might just want you to buy there BMW oil bottled by Spectro oil, or the Honda filiter made by Filtrec. You get my drift. Under warranty sometimes your are a slave to the system.

On a serious note...Turner Motorsport sells the OEM oil filter, their number OC 91 for $10.50 each.

I buy Bosch filters by the case from BeemerBoneyard. I'm not gonna tell which oil I use, but it isn't BMW and it isn't "motorcycle" oil

After much searching of this site when I did my last oil change, I put together this list of aftermarket filers that will work on the R1100S. I can only vouch for the Bosch though, and it will work with the BMW oil filter wrench by the way.
Mann #71216 PF1377 Purolator PL10241 Bosch 72161 Mahle OE91 K&N KN163
