Whining noise in drivetrain

Hi all, first time here, looks like a great community and forum! I bought a 96 R1100R with only 8000 miles on it, and I just love it. After only 600 miles, I noticed a small squeaky noise in the lower gears coming from the drivetrain under low r's, or lugging, just for a moment when accelerating. As soon as the motor got on the pipe, the noise would go away, so I took care not to lug it too much. Last night a higher pitched noise seems to have started, that is just there at low r's, in any gear, including neutral. I'm suspecting an output bearing of some sort. Any clues, and an idea of how hard this would be to fix? I'm a 40 year dirtbiker and fairly mechanical, but this beast looks quite a bit more involved than my KX450f was....thanks in advance.

Just an update, was thinking that the noise was coming from the drivetrain, like maybe a throw out bearing, but didn't change by engaging or disengaging the clutch like it would on my dirtbike. It seems to be coming from the front of the motor oddly. And even odder, fired it up Sat and Sun, and the noise is now gone. Crazy.

Front of engine might be alternator? Belt driven unit, belts aren't too badly priced over at beemerboneyard, I picked one up but haven't replaced it yet.. Figure its a good standby item since mine has 10x that mileage

Hope it doesn't come back, could have just been the bike not knowing whats going on after not being ridden much for 17 years

Matt

+1 Check the belt first. I had small gravel in mine and it would only squeal for a few minutes after startup when the alt. was replacing the battery juice used.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll be sure to check. Thankfully, the guy who sold me the bike included a Chilton manual with it
