rekeying system cases (bmw saddlebags)

I need to rekey the system case saddlebags for my r1100s. I can't get the cylinders out of the saddlebag. Can some one tell me how to release the cylinder so it will slide out? I know where the hole is but I can not find anything in there to push on to make the release.

There is an article regarding modifying the keylock cylinders to be able to remove the key when unlocked. This is a mod I have been planning to do for a while but haven't got to it. It should explain how to get the cylinders in and out as well, R-Bag Keylock Mod

PM Anton Largiader on this forum. He did an article on the very subject in RA Magazine, issue before last.

The key has to be turned to the correct position in order to depress the locking tab. Try turning key to both locked and unlocked position and depressing tab through hole. One of the two positions will allow you to remove cylinder from case.
Good luck,
Black12s

P.S. this is just a guess, but has worked for a topcase I used to have on my R1100RS

I mostly followed the recipe in that article. I bought a kit from BMW with a selection of the various bits needed to get the right collection of tumblers. The entire job took maybe 30 minutes, with time out to drink a beer. I think I used a jeweler's screwdriver instead of a paperclip, but that was probably because it was stiffer (thus inviting comments from the peanut gallery).

Did you buy another lock & key set and cannibalize it for the tumblers, or was there a tumbler kit available?

BMW's lock cylinder kit is part #51 252 337 270. It's been a couple of years, but it seems to me it included both tumblers and cylinders. Since the cases I had already had tumblers and cylinders in them, I wound up with some extra parts. In any case it was pretty easy to do.

I just took out my cylinder and took it to the BMW dealer and he had enough spare inserts to get it keyed to my ignition key. No charge.

Mmmm. Free = good. Reminds me that I need to get a spare key (again).

My dealership parts guy wasn't very knowledgeable over the phone. He didn't think the cylinders were removable from the multi-function box. When I told him I've had them out and tinkered with swapping the tumblers around, he sounded confused. Maybe I'll just take the cylinders in and see if the shop is more capable in person than they claim to be over the phone.

Thanks for the part number info.

I did mine a little while ago. I was able to swap the pins around, and left one out. but it is still secure enough for me. Let's face it, if someone can pick locks, one extra pin won't stop them.

Locks just keep the honest guy honest. I believe there are 6 possible pins and you can really get by if 4 of them fit the desired key.

Yea, I just swapped positions on the original tumblers and may have filed one to get it to match. I believe there are only 4 separate tumbler lengths, to worry about.
