I was looking at some of the entries in the link. Do the bikes have to turn or anything? Or are they just for looks? Also, when do you think the builders will ever finish the bikes? I mean, most of them don't have mufflers on them, they just have some pipes.

Not a competition entry... but while we're on the topic of 1-off or limited production bikes... these are really growing on me:

Confederate Motorcycles - F131 Hellcat - Hand crafted American luxury sport motorcycles, motorcycle accessories, parts, and apparel
Confederate Motorcycles - B120 Wraith - Hand crafted American luxury sport motorcycles, motorcycle accessories, parts, and apparel
Confederate Motorcycles - P120 Fighter - Hand crafted American luxury sport motorcycles, motorcycle accessories, parts, and apparel

The first two (HellCat and Wraith) remind me somewhat of the promised but yet-to-be-released BMW Lo-Rider concept bike. Prices are what you might imagine for limited edition, hand fabricated artwork. The specs are intriguing for each but I've not heard a report from someone who has actually ridden one.

Brad Pitt and/or Tom Cruise... if you're lurking... this might be a good time to pipe up and tell us about your HellCats.

Ian

many of the custom bikes don't run and aren't designed to. when i worked with yamaha, they would commission half a dozen bikes from builders, none of which were expected to run. it's a design and creativity exercise, used to spark the imagination. there aren't any confines and very few rules.

matter of fact, some "show bikes" that you see are gutted...very few internal parts (missing pistons, rods, starter, transmission components, etc...). why leave them in if you're only going to push the bike around? leave 'em out...it's lighter!

Yeah, gotta admit, that's pretty cool. Looks like a stretched R100 tank.

There is a distinct lack of originalilty out there. So I will say this, the bikes in this category are nothing if not original. Bravo!

That kudo aside, taking two Nevel/Ural sidevalve engines (He's from Belorus, right?) and putting an Eton supercharger on top is going to result in some issues.

Looks cool....may even go for a while, but the main problem with these old sidevalves was, and still is insufficient cooling, and stacking one set of cylinders behind the others ain't going to help....not to mention the supercharger.

My guess is that this bike is not only un-roadable, and unrideable, but probably undraggable as well as it would probably have a seizure about half way down the quartermile.

My new favorite from this category:

Simson from Hungary. OK the wheels are from a tractor, but otherwise it looks like you could ride it, and it would be fun to ride....until you had to stop.

(bradzdotcom, my comments aren't directed at you, just the concept...)

If the bikes don't even have to run (or meet any other obvious criteria of a motorcycle such as turn, stop, be ridden and hold together), then the 'creativity' exercise reminds me of my kindergarden class; "Timmy, that's a beautiful ashtray. Here's your 'Participant' award." Only difference is these guys can bend tubing, weld and paint too. Someone should make one of these show bikes out of solid chocolate. About 85% cocoa would be perfect. Or just enter a beautiful painting of a motorcycle.
