2002 R1100S Breather hose question

***accidentally posted in a different thread, so re-posting here. My apologies for repeats***

Heya!

So I am really enjoying my new (to me) 1100S. Rides great!

Two questions:

1) There is a mild hum at all times when running - sounds a bit like a low- pitch tuning fork might sound...
It is different from the servo whine when brakes engaged. It changes just a bit when the brakes are engaged and the servo whine joins it. It doesn't sound worrying, but figured I'd ask, as I can't find any related info.

2) I have 4 breather or drain hoses that come out on the right side of the bike near the paralever. I have noticed that one of them drips a tiny, tiny bit (maybe one drop) of oil after a ride. Might this be something to look into?

Thanks and I am sure that I will have a lot more questions as I get to know the bike...

That is, most likely, your fuel pump which runs all the time the bike is running.

It changes pitch with the use of the brakes because of the reduction in system voltage while the ABS/power assist pump is being used during braking,

This falls into the category of "they all do that". Variables are: some fuel pumps are quieter than others, some R1100S bike do not have ABS.

Oh, and a BTW.. the hoses in that area are most likely rements of a cannisterectomy and are fuel breather tubes, maybe a battery vent, that sort of thing,

Mine drips a small bit of gasoline if I have just filled up or riding on rough roads. Not enough to address.

Great! I will not worry about it then. Thanks!

One hose is the fuel tank high point vent, assuming someone removed your charcoal canister.

One is the gas cap drain, to drain rain water with bike on side stand or center stand.

One might be a battery vent line, from when a wet cell battery was installed.

Not sure about number 4.

Fuel pump whine changes with tank level too. When full pump is covered and quiet. When you burn off fuel it's more noticeable.

Welcome to the family!

If your bike still has the charcoal canister (ugly black can thing on right rear) the drip might be gas with the charcoal in it. Get rid of the canister before it causes real problems. Check out Chris Harris’s video on why and how.

# 4 hose should come reservoir caps on ABS unit. Sometimes if they are overfilled while being serviced they will drip a little brake Fluid.

Damn. I'm getting old. If you can hear the Servo then it must have Integral ABS. Therefore the caps are vented with a hose.

Ah thanks! That explains why it seems louder today.

And thanks! Happy to be here!

if you have servo abs make certain the brake switches are adjusted properly
or the servo motor will run all the time
not a good thing, if you turn it on, dont start it the motor sound should go away
after a few seconds until you actually start the bike
and the servo will make noises when you first make the the brake levers move.
before it builds brake pressure.
