OT: classic cars from your youth

This is a picture of my sister before her first (only??) ride in an authentic, original, numbers matching, 440 sixpack, 1970 Superbird. State Farm would only insure it for $200,000. The owner reckons it's only one of five built and worth $250k. Is that real?

My Bro-in-law expressed surprise that S/F would even go that high, let alone allow the owner actually drive it around Billings Montana streets for fun! I have to wonder how it wound up in Billings anyway.

Didn't these sell for +/- $6000 new?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1300670933.jpg

If you own a car like that, you should get insurance from a company that specializes in insuring classic cars.

What i find hard to believe is how much cars that were common place, like a mid 70s Camaro, go for these days.

I guess that is part of getting old. My did bought a old LaSalle limo in the 40s because he wanted the tires off of it. When he was done with it, him and a buddy set it on fire and sit in it as long as they could stand the heat, then they got out and let it finish burning. No telling what that thing would be worth today.

I watched a 1970 Mustang Boss 429 go for $250,000 yesterday at a Barrett Jackson auction.

Without checking, I think your numbers are reasonably correct. I don't think there were only 5 built, not by a longshot. I heard when those things hit, they just sat on the lot, virtually unsellable. The ones with the 426 hemi are worth the big bucks. It was a hugely expensive option, $2,500 if I remember correctly. Seems like the muscle cars with the rare, super-expensive engine options are the ones worth the most now. I think the Chevrolet ZL1 is the rarest.

My youth was in the late 60s to early 70s. I remember being enamored with the '73 Trans Am with the 455SD. My dream car from back then that I'd love to have now would be this- a Ferrari 330 GTC...

Those 330GTC's were (and still are) sweet! My fave Ferrari of that era was the Lusso Berlinetta.

The car I owned in those days that I'd most like to have back is this...the one in which I courted my lovely lady in 45 years ago....

I re-read the email, I left out the part where the owner specified there were only 5 Yellow ones. Whatever the case, I'm green with envy.

My favourite car that I can still not have would be an original Challenger, but I'm sure I have lots of company there.

Regarding insurances on classic old cars and junkers. Try American Collectors Insurance here in the states (Maybe they would do Australia too), or any of the other specialty companies. They limit miles driven, but are cheap. My Porsche is only $111 per year for total coverage. Rates are always extremely high when insured with a State Farm, or Allstate type company.

My brothers project. 67 Impala!

Not all cars are pristine. 10 years he's been dinkin' around with this...

I bet we all have a a lot of if only. Mine were a 53 Cadi Coupe DeVile, 57 Ford, 66VW Bug with air, and a 72 Dodge Challenger Rally Pkg 340. Oh almost forgot my dream car the one with the surf board racks on top and the 4 track. A 59 Nash Rambler 3 on the tree and OD on the dash, I was a bad ass.

Classic cars from your youth.........

............. well there is just one car I remember first.

That is the 1972 BMW 2000 of my daddy. It was his first BMW car, he was so proud of it and with only one exception he has always driven BMW cars since then.

I was nearly 7 years old and one dull sunday my daddy let me "drive" his car, I was sitting on his lap, that big steering wheel in my hands, racing that cartway in 2nd gear with sensational ~12 mph. I was so proud and so excited ! :D

Sofa:

You sure about that? Those 2000 series BMWs were not available here in the US after the launch of the 2002 in '68. I had three 2002s.. the last an Alpina

I found and restored all the cars that I dreamed of in my youth.. some kids never grow up...

@smddanny: Yes, the BMW 2000 was built from 1966 till 1972. My dad bought one of the late models for a good price until it was replaced by a BMW 2500 in 1975, the next 2500 in 1976 and then a 735i in 1981 or early 1982 and a 750i in 1988 or 1989. But maybe I was wrong with the year and he already bought that BMW 2000 in 1971.
It's so long ago, seems I should ask him. All I remember is that I already went to school when he let me drive it on a cartway. So it could have been 1971 or 1972. SmileWavy

Here is some additional info: BMW 115 (german) I also still like the "sharknose" design of the 2000, 2000/2800CS, and the -02 series very much. The 3.0 CSi in your picture looks great !!!

BumbleBeemer36 03-22-2011 03:43 PM

My first car was a '74 BMW 2002 in Verona red. This was in 1996 :) but it was pristine. We still have it but 15 years of being covered rather than garaged has taken it's toll on the paint.

PFFOG 03-22-2011 05:23 PM

A few that might be memorable.

My 2nd car a Ford Torino fast back. came with a 351 windsor. I rebuilt a 390 and a C6 tranny and dropped it in, put a Holly 780 (If memory is correct) 4 bbl on it. I had to make my own motor mounts and cut and shortened the drive shaft in the basement. Was a fun car but like all American cars handling sucked, but it would sure burn off tires. Mine was Gold.

http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/atta...cture003-2.jpg

Third car, got smart and bought a 74 Saab EMS, Just like this, striping and all, but mine had the original "soccer ball" rims, not the optional Ronals. 2 liter, fuel injected 4 speed. Tons of fun and turned me into an aficionado of twisty roads.

http://bringatrailer.com/wp-content/...oor_Rear_1.jpg

After a series of Saabs, next classic was a 1988 Saab 9000 Turbo. About 180 Hp factory, I pulled and played with the ECU and over boost switches, and bumped the boost from 1.2 bar to a little over 2 Bar (29+) psi. Made a water/alcohol injection system using an EFI injector, and an electric fuel pump, used the 1 gallon windshield washer tank for a reservoir. All junk parts cost me just a few bucks Figured it had between 275-300 hp (from a 2 liter), would light up the tires at 40 mph in 3rd when you nailed it. Tons of fun for a 5 passenger family car.

http://saabpicgall.co.cc/pictures/ca...6/saab9000.JPG

And now stuck in a rut, last 2 have been 94 Saab Aeros, one white, current one red, stock 2.3 liter put out 250 Hp, current one has ecu and 3" exhaust pushes approx 280 hp. Still fun, almost as mush fun in the twisties as a bike.

They have the BEST seats ever put in a non exotic car, made by recarro.

Meeni 03-22-2011 05:34 PM

My first car was a Renault 5.

I wish it looked like that, but it actually was more like this ...

sheeat...in the early to mid 70's and then on until about 1990 cars were boring frakkin' cages, and I didn't care if it was an F40 ferrari.

Today I'd settle for a new 911 turbo.

And btw, in the early 90's there was a numbers matching 426 hemi super bird in fairbanks alaska....the guy had more toys than he could count.
