Anybody been to the BMW factory in Munich? Any suggestions?

I"m going to Munich next month to do a factory delivery of a new BMW, and was wondering if anyone has been to the factory and has any must-do advice while I'm over there. My original plan was to pickup the car the morning after I arrive, but they're booked up and I'm going to be in Munich for several days before I can hit the road through the Alps and into Italy, so I'm trying to plan my days in Munich accordingly. Is there a separate motorcycle museum at the factory? Any restaurant advice in and around the factory? Unfortunately I won't be able to do any riding while I'm over there, but the driving should be a lot of fun! I'm going to visit Ferrari and Ducati as well, so I'm getting to see the home of all my favorite stuff!

Let me just say I think you'll be very impressed with the presentation they provide to new car deliveries at the factory. The museum is right across the street and houses both bikes and cars.

As for drives, I spent a few days driving around southern Bavaria, Berschesgarten (Eagles Nest), Salzburg, Innsbruck and Garmisch, just beautiful roads and countryside. I'm going back sometime this summer and want to do it on a bike this time, enjoy the trip.

The museum is fantastic - don't miss it.
Here's my tip:

Don't have your wife go around the velvet rope and stand next to the BMW F1 car (without touching it, BTW) for 22 seconds while you take a picture of her.
The "guard" on duty will begin foaming at the mouth screaming something in German. Touchy security.

Joseph,

This is a timely post. I will also be in Munich but not until early September of this year. One of my goals is to visit the BMW Museum. Also looking for any other must see attractions in the area. One more coincidence is that I'm thinking about a European delivery of my next car (BMW) but I haven't finalized anything as of yet. I'm looking at a M3 what about you?

Joseph, We just got out first M-1 at my dealer and it sure is gorgeous in the Valencia Orange. Congrats on the purchase, Relatively speaking that package seems like quite the value. Picking up the car at the The BMW Welt is really quite something, enjoy your trip in Munich. I was told the tickets for museum tours often sell out, so pre purchase them to secure your spot.

To kill time in Munich, there is Marienplatz, and the Glockenspeil, nearby is the Hofbrauhaus too.

The Deutsches Museum is a science and technology museum, that will keep any one that likes stuff that sparks, spits fire, makes HP etc busy for a day.

You can watch the kids surf and the inhibited sunbathe in Englischer Garten.

There is an aircraft museum affiliated with the Deutsches Museum the Flugwerft Schleissheim that is West of Munich.

Dachau has a concentration camp Museum.

If you have a rental car, there are dozens of places with in a days travel from Munich. A little S is the village of Bad Tolz, a bit touristy , but a very pretty town.

Saltzburg was also mentioned, and is an easy day trip, take a walking tour if you can.

Don't forget to try, again and again, Hacker-Pschorr.
It just tastes way better in Munich than it does in the import bottles here.
When I drink beer, that's my favorite.

The beer is so fresh over there it just exudes flavor, like the difference between fresh baked home made Chocolate chip cookies, and Chips Ahoy.

Sorry Cage, I probably just blew your diet for the week just talking about it

BTW, Hacker-Pschorr Dunkel is one of my favorites.

We were in Munich in March and went to the museum. We've been to the car factory there a couple of years ago. Both are great. Even better is the motorcycle factory in Berlin! The tour is "hands on", i.e. they let you handle internal engine parts while walking down the manufacturing (pre-assembly) line. If you go to Munich, you can't miss Hofbrauhaus It's by far the "happiest place on earth" - despite what Disneyland claims.

Since you have a couple of days, I suggest visiting the Audi museum, 1 hr by train. Also, Stuttgart, less than 2 hrs by train, is fantastic. The Mercedes and Porsche museums are there. In terms of museum experience, I would have to rate Mercedes the best because it integrates the context of history into its presentation of cars, trucks, aircraft, etc. I've been to Munich and germany five or six times and would be happy to offer more ideas and tips for getting around - feel free to send a pm.

+1 to all of this, this was a great short summary of the highlights of my own visit to Munich, although I think the PP meant the UNinhibited at the English Gardens. Go investigate on a sunny day and report back what you think :-).

The BMW museum was indeed excellent, as was the Technology museum. My sole regret was that we did not get to do the BMW factory tour, and I think that has to be scheduled in advance. The next time I am in Munich I am doing that, no matter what.

On the driving suggestions, for sure, go due south into the Alps and consider a stay at Seefeld. I did an Austria-based Edelweiss trip a couple of years ago and we were based out of a nice spa/hotel there called Hotel See Spitz IHR Hotel in Seefeld, Tirol - Willkommen im Hotel Seespitz Zeit****! and it was an excellent hotel/spa and jumping-off point for day trips.

Wow, you have a fantastic trip in store, have fun.

I visited the Zugspitz the two weeks I was at the NATO Schule in Oberammergau. Take the train one way and the gondola lift the other way.
