Angeles Crest Highway

Hey all you folks here in So. Cal. I just saw on the news that Angeles Crest Highway is opening again TODAY. It's been shut down for about a year for repairs. Something about a ceremony at 10:00 AM. So, ya got to wait at least 2 more hours.

Not to mention getting taken out by a squid coming the other way in your lane... ACH can be quite scary on busy summer weekends...

You have no idea... A year and a half ago or so ACH opened up al lthe way from La Canada/Flintridge to Wrightwood for the first time in something like 7-8 years. It lasted all of a few months then a HUGE forest fire buckled the road and burnt down al lthe guard rails and it has been over a year fixing that.

Too bad it's virtually the best mountain motorcycle road in all of SoCal filled with nicely banked sweepers, and great sightlines through a granite and pine forest at 4000-8000ft. Awesome.

SoCal moto riders are rejoicing today!

Did it today, nicely rersurfaced for a few miles from La Canada, then old tarmac all the way to Newcomb's, then resurfaced again a few miles after NCs, but watch out, very slipery, some guys were even picking up gunk on their tires. From Islip Saddle it was old tarmac again but very dirty and lots of rocks. Road work still going on at 3 different spots. But at least it's open!

I've got the pictures to prove it.

I was planning to do a 6.30 run up with another friend tomorrow morning just to look see. Great feedback on the conditions, thanks.

Jaytee, I can't ride this Wed, but let me know when you do another mid-weeker and I'll try to join you.

JT, my 'new' place is less than 10 min from the base of ACH. When you want to ride up there some day, let me know and we can meet up.

john~you may have pictures, but i have actual signed documents!

rapid: i am offended. my farts are not old. every one of them is newly minted.

angeles may be open, but give it a little time.
there's all kinds of "klag" on the road from it not being used and that'll make it slippery.
there's all kinds of wildlife who have had the road to themselves without bikes or cars.

and all kinds of cops who, besides working a newly opened road, have just had the "slow them down" sermon they get every year at the start of summer.

IF (big if) the road stays open (no fires, floods, earthquakes planned) then i'd wait a couple of weeks and hit it like JT is doing, early on a weekday.
maybe by then the pebbles, deer and police will have settled down a bit.

just my two cents, which is actually worth about...lemme check that document i mentioned earlier....about $430.

One of the last times I was up there on a weekday (a Thursday no less, back in 08 or 09), I saw maybe 3 other motorcycles. The mentally skewed officer (Gonzalez I think was his name) was having a slow day so he decided to cite me for 75 in a 55. I typically have no problems signing those docs when I actually perform the deed. It's a cat/mouse game and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But my blood still boils since he flat out lied through his teeth.

Andy, Sergio, I'd love to hit ACH with you guys in the not-too-distant future. For myself, I'll definately be riding it on weekdays only (either weds or thurs) for a bit. My buddy who bought my R12ST can only ride weekends, however, so I can envision an eventual weekend date but prob not for a couple months after the craziness dies down. I'll stay in touch and keep y'all informed.

JT

PS: just did GMR for the first time this year, and guess what! Crystal lake is open!! Talk about a beautiful road! Awesome. First time open in 8 years, IIRC.

Gonzolez was infamous on that road. I wonder if he will be working it again or if he's moved on to bigger and better things...

I'm good with a weekday if I'm not working, so this week is out, but maybe the following week - let's keep trying. I like Wed as a day to go a lot, it is lovely to be able to drive over to Wrightwood for lunch.

I ended up not going today because it was gloomy, overcast and possibly drizzeling up the hill on that new tarmac, all of which sent me back to bed!

It was open all the way through to Wrightwood a month before the Station Fire as I did it then, and the only part affected by the fire was to the west side of Newcombes, so I would imagine it is.
