Digital Dashboard III

Things are clearing up a bit for my digital dashboard quest. I have posted many pics of digital options, the latest one being a dead ringer for the HP2S unit manufactured by the same company 2D (Debus & Diebold)

I called Germany to get the scoop on this (kind of funny and presumptious of me to assume they would speak English, and they do eventually, after they realize you don't speak German) but I digress. So heres the deal: $1500 euros (ouch) and it will only display, speed and rpm, oh and by the way, the engine wont start. So this unit is not compatible because of the BMW interlock electronics, nor will it ever be compatible, scratch that one. But wait! The BMW retrofit unit is finally available! (also highly recomended by the gentleman at 2D!) Here is the parts fiche:

and the part numbers:
No Part Number Description Qty Each
01 62117719732 instrument cluster (KM/H 37.0) NA 1
02 71607719833 set, wiring harness, i-cluster BUY 1 $102.95
03 71607715839 mounting kit, instrument cluster BUY 1 $87.00
04 07129906498 lock ring BUY 4 $1.29

No price on the cluster? it must be affordable right? of course NOT! the unit is north of $2000 and there may be a switch change needed, oh and the software needs to be upgraded, so a BMW service call will be part of the price as well all said and done it will be close to $3000 for a fabulous aesthetic improvement. Makes those BST wheels look like the deal of the century (and they very well may be!) Peace, out...

I was riding today Shreddr and thinking about your quest for the dash. I looked at my white faced dials and thought how easy they are to read at a glance, maybe there not that bad!

Hmm

In fact I confess that I've played a bit (in theory) with the whole idea. My goal is more techno freak (think the GS-911 info "mode" - like seeing all the BMS-K operational parameters "on-line").

These GetData fellas in Italy maybe can answer protocol related questions...(maybe not).

Other than that is noticeable the absence of in depth AND detailed info about how exactly the BMS-K/ ZFE/I-cluster work (other than the diagrams available in Haynes manuals).

But hey...BMW doesn't even allow KTM to sell me a fan for my oil cooler (KTM makes these as a subcontractor)...thus...

It is really tough to draw a line when you are talking bling. For recreational track performance, a bone stock R1200S will easily keep you running with the pack in the expert group. So rational thought has no place in the bling-fling process. That is just a distraction from the pleasure blinging brings. Once you go down that path, you must do it without guilt to maximize the benefit. So, stop rationalizing your fun, Shreddr. Instead, wallow in it. If you splash a little on a bystander and they get cranky, don't even look up. It's your party. Enjoy!

I need to remind myself that I cant compare the dollar amount I have invested in my blinged out R12S and the price of an HP2S, because it doesn't factor in the depreciation on the base bike. if i end up with $22K invested in the R12 (seems like the current financial trajectory), I would still be about $10K away from an HP2S, assuming my base bike is worth about $9 - 10K these days, and selling off the bling (CF bits, digital dash?, and wheels, $6000) I can't sell the pipe because I dont have the stocker, and the pistons and rods aren't coming back out once I get them in there. So although some of these parts are expensive, it is truly the most cost effective way for me to have HP2S bling on an R12S platform. no flames from HP2 owners telling me there is no comparison!

here is a line from that website regarding the moto items

"Special Note for Ducati Motorcycles: Ducati bikes have an 'immobilizer' circuit built into the dash, which prevents plug and play replacement. "

sound familiar?

I am a little wary about these add-ons, as I believe, after playing with the new Zumo 660 GPS and its customizable display, these units may become our digital dashboards for a lot less $$.

I Like It! There seems to be an issue with the fact that the stock BMW units are sending a signal back to the "brain" saying its ok to let the engine start. Given that even the 2D unit doesn't accomplish this, I'm not sure how some of the other aftermarket items could. Perhaps I need to leave the stock instrument cluster on, and put one of the aftermarket units over it (that should look plenty crappy!). I do like the GPS integrated unit, in fact I put that out there a few months ago, and now the product is here! Definately the future of the digital displays!

Look up this post from Digital Dashboard I. I think AIM sports has a dash. I had checked out their site, they seem to offer a few different models some less than $1k and I think without the need to add/swap a computer. NoCalRider talks about it in his post.

AIM has a street version....MXL Strada. There's more info on the connection types, CAN Protocal or RS232. Below is the manual/pdf on the CAN version. I assume CAN is short for CANBUS?
