AMA: down, down, down
I received this terse notice from VIR, my local track...
"No AMA Pro Racing event will take place at VIR in 2011. If circumstances are conducive in 2012, VIR looks forward to renewing its relationship with AMA Pro Racing." Sounds like DMS is PO'ing just about everyone.

Why do you assume its DMG's fault? My understanding is this is entirely VIR's fault.

Pretty clearly the track's issue. THEY took over promotion from the real (and past successful) professional promoters this year, and didn't make decent numbers in pre-sales, and so pulled the plug, thus leaving the AMA and the regional fans in the lurch.

who signed a contract many months ago to hold a race? VIR
who quit 30 days before the event? VIR who is in breach of contract with AMA? VIR who has now effed up the Speed TV contract for AMA/DMG? That'd be VIR again. who got their series chopped off even further? the racers and manufacturers involved. who is left holding the bag on plane and hotel reservations? A few hundred people. who doesn't get to see a live road race? a few thousand people. who doesn't get to see it on TV? all of us. VIR says: "If circumstances are conducive in 2012, VIR looks forward to renewing its relationship with AMA Pro Racing." don't hold your breath VIR people. and while you're not putting on AMA races anymore (and probably never will again), you might want to look up the word "integrity". while you're there, learn to spell. it's "conductive" you morons. this started out as a ten race series. now it's only eight. back story: here's the RUMORS: #1. at the last race's riders meeting, some of the B level riders on the west coast complained about the cost of going to VIR, especially those towards the bottom of the points. AMA Pro Racing's COO Dave Atlas was trying to work with them to resolve that. Rumors that he said "if you guys don't go, we may have to cancel" are not true, according to people who attended the meeting. #2. Connie Nyholm (cnyholm@virnow.com), co-owner and manager at VIR pulled the plug because pre-event ticket sales weren't good enough and they were going to break even or lose money. Up until last year, a separate promotion group, M1 Productions, was doing all the pre-event PR work. VIR fired them and took all the event promotion work "in-house". Attendance at their events has been down ever since. i have heard about nyholm a few times in the past and none of it was even remotely favorable. sad news about the event, but good news that nobody has to deal with that prick nyholm anymore. |

i'd be really surprised if they didn't sue, especially considering the third guy mentioned here as the group running the show:
"Now collectively run by a Managing Member group headed up by racing veteran David Atlas, joined by NASCAR Executive Tom Bledsoe and Daytona Beach attorney Chris Harris" |

Hey Brad, no argument with what you say here but "conducive" means; Making a certain situation or outcome likely or possible... me thinks that maybe they chose the right word after all. ![]()

Sucks about racing, though. VIR is only 150 miles away, and I was looking for an opportunity to actually attend a race again, which I haven't done since BMW left MOTO-ST.

And today I received this: "VIR has received a number of inquiries and expressions of disappointment regarding the lack of a 2011 AMA Pro Racing event at VIR. As with any disagreement, there are two sides to every story. We want to make it clear that the decision was not one-sided, as David Atlas' remarks have implied, and that VIR made numerous proposals to AMA Pro Racing to keep this event on schedule. Due to our 10 year history with this premiere event, we are as disappointed by this outcome as most of those we have heard from. VIR has worked hard to bring the event to fruition for months. Despite requests by VIR beginning in December 2010, AMA Pro Racing did not deliver its proposed contract for the 2011 event to VIR until early June 2011. Resulting discussions made it apparent that insufficient time remained to negotiate the new terms in the proposed contract and, if agreement were reached, to plan, promote and conduct the event in a professional manner. In an effort to preserve the date, VIR went to extraordinary lengths to reach an alternative agreement with AMA Pro Racing, which AMA Pro Racing chose to reject. Given these circumstances, we had no choice but to take the date off the calendar and notify the public promptly." Unhappiness abounds. And not to put too fine a point on it, the correct word choice is "conducive" not "conductive".

Always appreciate your insider knowledge on our sport Brad. My post was only meant to show the meaning of the word they used, not defend their business dealings.
