Tail light / brake light reflector removal?

Guys,

I'm installing some hyperlites on my R1100S. I need to remove the rear reflector to get at the wires behind the tail light / brake light socket. I got the cover off and the bulb out no problem, but the reflector won't come out. Is there a trick to it? I don't want to break this thing. Do I need to go in from the other (front) side?

Thanks,

Please post a picture when you are done :)

Look at this diagram, there are 2 bolts that you can remove only when you have removed the tupperware plastic of the entire rear end...

Thanks. I'm glad I didn't pull harder on it. I might actually be getting smarter in my old age.

When working on a BMW remember Rule #1-DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING!!!

I've been looking at these hyper lights as well. If I could ask, what site and kit did you order from? was there anything special they had to/you had to do for the kit to accommodate the r1100s? Mine is a 99.

thanks

Digging up a very old thread, but in looking at the diagram, I can't figure out where the bolts are that hold it in. Any pictures?

1 - Take the rear cowl off
2 - Take the seat off
3 - Take the saddle bag mounts off if you have them
4 - Take the right and left rear side panels off
5 - Take the rear cowling around the tail light lens off
6 - Once everything is off they are easy to see.

Do you really have to take the whole back end apart to change the brake light? I took out the two screws in the red lens, but couldn't get the lens to come out. (What are you supposed to do if the brake bulb burns out while you're on the road? Sheesh!)

You're overcomplicating it, just remove the 2 screws & pull the lens off, turn & remove bulb.

Lens is stuck somehow, I guess. You can't really grab onto it, but I used duct tape to get a hold of it, then wiggled, jiggled, twisted and pulled...no joy. I was afraid to do much more, since that lens is $60. But maybe it's just stuck to the gasket...will try again this weekend.

+1 There's a seal for red lens that develops some good adhesion. You only have to take the back end apart to pull the tail light reflector, not the bulb or lens....
