International Shipment Question
I need to send my digital dashboard to Germany to have it reprogrammed. I am going to use USPS and I need to fill out the customs form. What should I call the contents? I want to insure it for $1000 but I don't want to pay any duties. Any thoughts or pointers?

Might be cheaper to pack it in a suit case and hand deliver it.

Call the contents....."Electronics". Make sure it does not "Tick".
I was wondering how you made out with the dash........mine seems to be working fine. Cheers

I'm not going into detail the net makes this world a small place,I bought something in the States and had the same problem,I told the seller to insure it for next to nothing and took the risk and got away with it and paid zero import duty, but you also need the co-operation from the other end. Not sure how you will get on having it sent back,as it's yours in the first place, but I'll PM you. |

...tru dat.
Declare zero and pay no customs and take a chance that it gets there in one piece or declare the value and pay the customs. That said, if you're sending for repairs there should be some way around this. Note that UPS is WAY more expensive than US Postal....just sayin'.

...also, talk to the receiver. They should know what to do.
There is 'commercial sample', 'gift' etc. on the USPS form.

shipping to europe
Shred,
There is a way to do this, I ship bells to Europe all the time for re-work, and only pay duty on the value of the work performed. Example: we repaired a broken Paul Revere bell for Colby College in Maine, we insured the bell for the replacement value of the bell in case the clients item was lost or destroyed in shipping, when we did the re-entry, we logged it as returning goods, and declared the value of the repair, paid tax only on the repair. A warranty repair should have "no value" . Certainly a customs broker could handle this for you, but on the east coast you will probably pay $3-400 for their services. I would think the USPS would have the forms for this. It will be difficult to find someone at a post office that is an expert on customs, and where to get the forms. in my experience. US customs will know exactly what to do, call them and ask, probably at Newark for you. They are very helpful. Just tell them exactly and honestly what you want to do, and they will get you through it with a minimum of fuss, if you try to bull**** them , they will see right through it... |

I decided to go with FedEx, which was $80 more than the USPS at $122, but somehow I get the feeling you get what you pay for. He will have it by Monday.

When I've mailed stuff back to the Fatherland, I write "return and repair," which ensures no duty is owed. IIRC, you can't buy insurance with the USPS for overseas shipments over $600. My homeowner's insurance co. said that, as long as I have some kind of tracking number on it, if it gets lost, they'd cover it. I had to mail one of my Sinn watches back for warranty repair.

![]() Keep at it with the mods, Jeff. You're only some major cf purchases and a paint job away from being awarded a complimentary HP2 Sport VIN. Last edited by Guest24; 09-11-2011 at 05:30 AM.. |
