Front disk rattle
 

I remember reading about it before but a search did not find it.
My front disk rattles loose in it's floating spring washers. I'm going to re-check the torque specs but I'm guessing their dead on.
Anyone have this before? Is it weak springs or (gasp) warped rotor..:mad:

Apparently there have been problems with the wheel itself wearing where the rotor attaches. The steel rotor rubs against the alloy wheel and the steel wins. Might be worth checking.

I checked and the little bushings that hold the disks and spring washers are burnished on 2 spots but I doubt there much out of round. I do have almost 75,000k of all weather riding on the bike however.
Time for a trip to the dealers.

Also, somebody else cured this problem by fitting new spring washers (if my memory serves me correctly)

doubt it is a warped roter
 

a warped rotor would have much worse symptoms, namely fading brakes. this year at bike week, a friend had to replace his front tire when he arrived, somehow one of the front rotors got bent (we think the tire change did it) but as a result the warped rotor would push the brake pistons back into the caliper thus pushing the brake fluid up into the master cyclinder further worsening to no front brakes unless he pumped them up...no i will add this did not happen to a beemer, it was a harley road king, but the principles are the same.

Hope this isn't too late? You'll probably find the sleeves in the rotors have flats worn on them. Cure is simple: loosen bolts, rotate sleeves 90 degrees, tighten bolts. That should quiet the rattle long enough. New bolts, sleeves and wave washers are pretty cheap anyway.

I did that and it did help but not as much as I wanted. If the problem is as simple as replacing the washers, I'm a happy camper.

My brother had the same problem with his '94 RS at about 48K miles. He replaced the bushings and that solved everything. Pick up and install new bushings and everything will be A-OK!

Ok. Took the bike to the dealer today & here's what he said.
The brake disk should have side to side motion but any rotational motion shows worn bushings and the bushings need replacement. The little spring washers just prevent the disk from rattling and causing owners of very costly bikes from pestering their dealers at every little sound.

Bad news is the little bushings and springs are wear items and not covered under warrenty.
Good news is the procedure is very quick and parts are resonably priced.

I guess that's the end of this tis thread.

Apologies in starting this thread up again, but I get a lot of disk pad rattle on my S. If I turn the engine off and glide down hill there is a lot of rattling noise from the disk pads. I can reproduce it when I stop by shaking the brake pads in their calipers.
I was interested to know if this is normal? Do you guys experience this or not?

When you remove the stock pads there are little "spring retainers" - anti-rattle clips - riveted to the pads. The pad retainer pins slides through those clips and pulls the pad against the pin, thus keeping it from rattling.

When I installed the EBC pads on my bike, I noticed the pads did not have those spring clips. I debated whether I'd really need them on the new pads. In the end, I decided I wanted them on the new pads. I transferred those clips to the new pads.

I'd bet not having those clips is producing the noise you're hearing. Is there any problems not running those clips? Not at all. IMO, as long as you're not hearing that rattling during breaking, I'd say you're just fine! So far as the pads are installed correctly, and I just can't see them not being installed right; and the noise isn't driving you crazy, I wouldn't worry about it.

I only hear the noise when the engine is turned off and it doesn't worry me, but I read this thread and thought that it was interesting that no one else mentioned that their pads rattled.
