there have always been two races that i absolutely, totally and consistently refused to even think about participating in:
isle of mann
baja 1000

i'm completely 100% fine with that.
just thinking about spectating in the wrong corner at the IOM scares me.
as far as baja 1k goes....i'd do Dakar 10 times first (sorry corky, it's just too cowboy down there).

Years ago I put the Baja 1000 on my bucket list, but it will never happen now. I would like to do a long dual sport ride still, if they quit shooting people down there that is.

That video of the IOM flat out scares me. There's no rational reason to do that, but its amazing to view the "spirit" that exists in a rare few. Would be interested to know what motivates folks to take such risks, but I chalk it up to "duty" if you're capable of it (a few of those folks apparently weren't - hope they're all ok).

It seems almost comical to me that they put padding on the light poles next to the course. That must just be for Mad Sunday to keep 'murricans from suing them for creating dangerous riding conditions.:rolleyes:

I wasn't too long ago when most European racetracks were like that. Assen, Nurburgring, Spa, Le Mans. I mean, we call it road racing for a reason. :) The biggest problem is that (like the Nordschleife @ Nurburgring) it is so long, it takes ages to remember the entire track. I mean, one lap is 38 miles. Try remembering that to the point you have blind faith throwing it into a corner at race pace. :eek:

I dunno... the run up to Newcomb's Ranch is 27 miles or so... I think after going up there about, 100 times, I have most corners down. Heck, after a two year hiatus the muscle memory comes back faster than you'd think. It's not so much blind faith in knowing the corner, it's blind faith as in I hope there's not a dear/rock/debris/etc on the exit of the turn.

Yeah, except THE IOM TT is 4 Laps so it will take a while before you get to a 100 times, but plenty time to kill yourself. ;)

Brad, you might would have loved the La Carrera Races from 1985 to 1990..........blind sense of duty the whole way. Here is part of the road seen in 1988 from a very fast car............motorcycles were different, what with the winds and all.

i know a few guys who did the carrera, all seemed to have a great time.
but no, no baja for me.
i know this for sure, because i used to work with Dave Ekins, who was the first guy to ride all the way through baja, way back when (article in moto-retro illustrated's next issue).
dave couldn't talk me into it. mcqueen and malcolm smith tried too.
it's just not for me.
'specially when i talk to john desoto (cow) and larry roeseler (vw vanagon).

that's not what they rode, it's what they crashed into while down there.

oh, and there's dick miller. and his leg. which they kinda/sorta/mostly sewed back on for him.

here's one for ya: my brother was down there running a team's pit crew. another team, sponsored rather openly by a drug cartel, had a chase helicopter (with one of the drug lords in it) that hit a power line and plowed in. being a paramedic, he rushed over to help...wasn't much he could do.
days later, a thousand miles apart, "some guys" showed up at his place, asking if the folks in the helicopter said anything before they passed.
about a week later, some DEA guys came to his fire station, asking the same questions.
baja is still pretty wild country in more ways than one.

ps: ekins still has the car he drove in the carrera. it's in the warehouse with some of his brother Bud's bikes, waiting to get museum-ed.

So... if I'm reading between the lines, the next Triple Crown ride is to your favorite watering hole (an undisclosed location) in Ensenada?

I'd love to ride down there but there's still 1000's of miles of roads in Cali for me to discover. ;)

I'd like to make a Triple Crown ride next year. I know you guys are selective to keep the size manageable but hopefully I can talk yall into it... I'm keeping an eye on how this thread turns out. ;)

I ran the La Carrera Classic in 1987 and even then..........it was wild. The Federals could be bribed.....and were........by people who needed to use the road.....even though it was blocked off in areas for the race. We were running "FFO" (flat ****ing out) on the first leg when all of a sudden I topped a hill and the whole area in front of me was covered with sheep! Down shifting, braking, and praying at the same time........I slowed, dodged, and almost went down as I got side ways after hitting sheep **** as they were very scared hearing those open megaphone Charles Axtell exhaust coming directly toward them. Two other bikes behind me did go down, but only sheep got broken up except for one guy who snapped a wrist pretty bad.

A lot of it is full wide open.........but when we did get in the mountains it was extreme, and very scary, with our motto being "no hay bales, no guard rails, no snivelers allowed."
