temporary power for GPS
I'll be trying to rig my Garmin to my '04 BCR for the ride back from Texas in a couple of days..is there a point I can pick up 12 volts easily? I don't care if it is switched or not, this is just for the trip back and I'll do it up right when I am home.

Well the easiest and closest would be to grab it at the back of the headlight, just slip a stripped wire under the connector. If you want to run under the seat, there is a connector along the right side, that is where the accessory outlet connects.

I was much easier for me to throw on the Zumo 550 because the GS had the GPS plug pre-wired. |

How about one of those bicycle generators that rub on the tire sidewall?

Power Supply for GPS
When you pull the the fairings, the battery is there after you lift up the tank an inch or so. Hate splicing into wiring harness. in fact, run the lead to the hot side of battery and ground the wire to any bolt. Don't have to ground to battery. I have an '04, too. That is what I did.
Have a great ride to Texas. Are you going to the International Bike Show in Dallas this weekend. Best, Nathan Margolis |

Does the bike have a factory powerlet jack?

Does the bike have a factory powerlet jack?
The owner isn't really a bike guy so this question is unanswered. I am bringing a euro powerlet plug with some wire so I'll be good if that is the case. My preference is to right to the battery but I just want to get this thing on the road and not have to screw around in a place that's not my shop. |

It was an accessory on the BCR's in '04
Like I said for me, a couple alligator clip leads or couple pieces of wire I could strip and slide under the headlight connections is the fastest quick and dirty solution, would take all of 2 minutes to be in business. You can do it right when you get home.

A set of allen wrenches, a few metric wrenches and a pre-fabed harness to the battery with lugs on the end and the Garmin plug on the other. You have to pull all the plastic and be careful with the o-ring on the fuel tank so as not to let it get out of it's place. You can tap into the wiring at the fuse block for the horn; but, going with the Powerlet battery direct outlet is best.

Powerlet pigtail photo. Comes with fuse protection and when you get home, you can use it for your battery tender.

If you're planning to remove the fairings to connect to the battery, several of the allen screws are in hidden locations. The ones inside the oil cooler air intake openings (under headlight) and the ones on the underside of the fairings (at brackets near the back side of the BMW plackards) are the most difficult to locate if you don't know where to look. The center fairing over the tank and filler doesn't have to come off, you just have to be mindful of the forward end when raisig the tank up. If this is yout plan, have a 2.5mm, 3mm (one of those is the fairing screw size), and 5mm allen wrench in whatever tools you bring. They might still be in the factory tool kit under the seat.

I PM'ed you as well but, have you ever been on Rt 69 from Sherman to Beaumont? I'm thinking not too much traffic and maybe an OK ride. Mike |

Trying to get to the battery on the R1100S is very time consuming, and hardly the easiest way to get temporary power. |

Just an update to all... I picked up the BCR Thursday afternoon and got up this morning and rode RT 69 from the top to the bottom of Texas, cold and rainy the first half of the day and nicer as the day went on.
Bike is too good to be true..the owner never even knew the rear cowl came off so the seat has never been removed and the tools are all there an untouched. He included all the BCR stuff, also never unwrapped and the plastic BCR model that came with the bike, never out of the box until last night and a battery tender. The bike does have a Powerlet It has a new set of Pilot Road 2's , started right up and ran like a scalded dog all day..got it a little over 90 plus mph..straight and smooth as can be. This may make up from all the not so good used bikes I have had over the last 30 years. Pics when I get back home in 5 days or so. Mike |

Great, Mike! The ride should get better as you run to the east. Tell us how your rigged the GPS. Sounds like you found a virgin in Texas.

I didn't get to rigging the GPS yet..which is why I missed a jog in Rt69 (raining and cold as ****) and ended up running 30 miles down Rt 106, in more rain and cold. I miss my GPS! I just follow the purple line and I never go wrong.
A virgin but as soon as I get home I'm adding bags, centerstand, a set of the really cool engine proection bars (maybe Z-technic?) with the mount for the extra lights and a genuine done -by-me valve and throttle body adjust..and fluid changes. gotta love a new toy..my GS will feel ignored for a few months. Still on the road, everything is just great.
I was looking the bike over this afternoon and I noticed there is a tool missing from the kit..I thought everything was there but I was wrong. It is the small curved "lug wrench" for removing the back wheel..anyone have one of these for sale? I'd like the kit to be complete. Mike |
