Options for BMWs in Germany

Most of the models in the BMW line up are available with the engine and all components painted black similar to the "special" editions they give us here. Even the S can be ordered with the option. Don't know that i would take it, but if anyone can work their way thru the Bike Configurator on the german site they will be surprised by some of the options that can be added or deleted much like the cars.

Quoting from a German market, BMW sales brochure:

Prices of year 2002 models (Sept. 01 was when it was printed) in Euro-Dollar and include 16% Mwst (tax)

Base R1100S 11,200.00
Special edition (yellow/black paint) 11,460.00

Black engine color: 0 (no price listed, so likely a no-cost option)
Partial-integrated ABS brakes: 1,040.00
5.5" rear wheel: 91.00
Higher out-put alternator: 26.00
Heated grips (includes hi-output alternator): 177.00
Higher handlebar and windshield: 55.00
System case holders: 103.00
Center stand (not available with sport suspension): 81.00
Sport suspension (not available with center stand): 260.00
Seat deck (included with special edition paint): 50.00

So to order the same bike as yours here (R1100SBX) it would cost about;
11,200
......91
+...260
---------
11,551/ 1.16 (to minus the tax)= 9,958Euro/ 1.1 (approx US$ to Euro exchange rate) = $9,053.

In order to get the exact options you want, you'll likely have to do a custom order (unless the dealer just happens to have the bike with the options you want) which can take a long time. Also, there is only a 1 year/unlimited kilometers warranty here.

the price difference is in the warranty

if you consider what manufacturers and dealers charge for warranties...people don't realize the dollars that go toward the warranty not all the parts. thanks for posting the info.

Let not forget that an "aftermarket warrantee" is considerably more expensive than what it costs the manufacturer. Especially if they do their job right.

just noticed one thing though

it doesnt mention the sport suspension, steering damper, or low clip-ons/windshield. i would have to believe that would increase the price a bit.

The sport suspension (yellow spring shocks & steering damper) is 260 Euro (much more if bought afterwards, as I disappointedly discovered). The low bars/windshield is standard with the higher bars and windshield a 55 Euro option.

In regard to price;
One must also consider exchange rates in regard to the lower prices here. Last year, before the introduction of the Euro, it took almost 2 DM to buy one Euro (I think when the Euro was introduced in the world market. Not in actual print, but when the participating European countries currencies were fixed to the Euro...It took more than a US$1 to buy one Euro dollar). With the US$1 now at about 1.1 Euros, that would put the US$1 at about 2.2 DM (if the DM still existed). About ten years ago, when I was living here, the US$ hovered around 1.6 DMs for the three years I live here.

So; Base 2002 R1100S (Incl. 16% tax) = 11,200 Euros = 22,000 DM / 1.6 = $13,750

Regardless, the price of a bike is not as relevant as the value one receives from ownership.
