As an aviator, when Porsche abandoned the air-cooled boxer I totally lost interest in the 911 series, now they are nothing more than glorified Subaru boxers and I like the latter better anyway, water for water.
I can't wait for BMW to f*u*c*k things up with a water cooled boxer! A nice radiator in front of that nice looking block will sure turn a lot of heads...but into the toilet for a vomiting session! What a shame!

just another staged spy shot.
i like that they block out the guy's face and bike's license plate. what possible difference could it make? to anyone? is MCN worried about embarrassing him? do they think others at bmw can't recognize their fellow employee? haven't realized the r&d group has a bike check-in/check-out list? does MCN want you to think that they weren't handed the image by bmw? IF it was a secret, it would never be loaded anywhere outside of a door-down warehouse, away from everyone including other employees. just the pr's department effort to circulate a board-approved, VP-blessed "spy shot". works every time! |

Nitro, what do you think is the water cooling going to change to the way the engine reacts to washing the throttle ? It still will be a boxer, with 2 giant jugs. It will still have all the fancyness of a big 2 cylinder opposed twin. I cannot clearly see any technical argument backing your rant, but I would be please to be enlightened.

I would like to see I picture of the front. How is the radiator mounted and guarded? From a visual standpoint it's very hard to pull off a naked bike with a radiator. Mechanically I think water cooled was inevitable.

that pic is actually kind of ugly, looks like they have taken a simple concept and complexed it to the point unrecognition

I'm really looking forward to this new motor. Being in Australia my oil/air cooled motor struggles to stay cool when our summer hits. All I get is a smell of burning oil when I pull up at a set of lights, and the chatter of the motor hitting together as the oil tries to do it's stuff.
I don't think it's going to loose character at all, I think it will gain even more! Also a few more HP would be good! Thanks for the post! |

OK so how many people think that is just wrong!
the flat twin was about #1 balance and #2 putting the jugs out in the airflow. So with liquid cooling we don't need to have the jugs out in the air anymore, Why even bother with a flat twin? ? If you want a 2 cylinder bike maybe a guzzi like concept is better? or is the balance of a flat twin still a major consideration? Now there is probably somebody who will say that the cylinders make really great foot protectors/warmers, but is that relevant?

For a GS you crash here and there, every other week, in the Gravel, I bet the insurance that your leg is not going to be mashed like potatoes is valuable
![]() Also the firing cycle for a boxer is different than a regular inline or V engine. I don't know to what point BMW couldn't do something pleasing with an inline 2 (think a very big 800GS) or a V (whatever the configuration is, SV650 or guzzi like); but it would probably feel different. Unlike a water cooled boxer, that would probably feel similar, except for being cooler. Last edited by Meeni; 08-22-2011 at 08:29 AM.. |

MCM points out radial brakes as a novelty for a GS. Does that mean no telelever? I thought there was no benefit for telelever front ends? It sure takes the simplicity out of the machine that I thought was so darn simple you could practically rebuild it in the middle of nowhere. Nein danke-

The exhaust goes forward, then back, wonder why?

Looks like the port is angled forward and the pipe continues that direction before turning back toward the rear & centerline. Hard to tell just from those two photos, though.
Note that the rear subframe is bolted on. Could be a sign of easier manufacture of various models with different ergonomics, like the K1600GT/GTL. Maybe an 'S' version is economically feasible in small volume if the major parts of the bike stay the same.
