You'd want the synthetic 4T 10W-50.

This is a little cheaper than the Castrol synthetic 4T recommended by BMW.

Depending on a climate you use it
10/40 is factory recommendation (semiS)
15/50- I would (fully Synth)
20/50 is recommended by those living in sunny states
plenty of choices to go by

So many correct answers.

But really, who cares what the owner's manual says.

One aspect worth mentioning about these engines, that at the time of production and the time of oil developments it was already coming from tried and tested design... beginning 1923

No surprise then, that OIL discussion threads are bit of mess and personal opinions end up being as important as data sheets (including real world performance)
Easy discussions to end up having very strong opinions and even disagreements, whilst most important matter is- hard to do much harm in using different to usual in the past lube.

DISCLAIMER:
that'd be about engine oil, not GearBox, as there I see design being flawed and corrected by RedLine Shockproof oil

Rob, if you want to get it right, pour all 6 different weights from 6 different Mfg`s in a bucket and mix. You will come up with : ( 10.8 W 41.6 ) name Mcpmqb brand. haha

It's simply paid product placement by Castrol. Seems to show up off and on in different manuals.

You could use the .99 cent oils in these bikes, they are not high stress engines. But why would we! A choice of oil says a lot about you as a person and your tastes in fine wines, jewlery, attire, etc. It would be like buying all your clothes at K-Mart. Oh the horror...

I don't use oil. It's far too controversial.

Also- my bike won't start or roll.

Nonsense CK, everyone knows oil filter procurement is the place to skimp!

I rarely try to get it right.

It showed up on F1 cars when BMW was there and will likely be on their DTM cars now that they've screwed up the courage to enter that. The only oil brand in any Boxer Cup 1100S decal collection, too.

Here's a direct quote from a BMW website in the UK:

Quote:
BMW recommend Castrol oils as they are co-engineered with our BMW motorcycle engineers. Use of the incorrect oils or products can lead to premature wear, poor performance and incorrect operation of engine parts, clutch, gearbox and axles. Please refer to the Castrol Recommended Oils Guide.
BMW Motorrad UK.

But, no question cynicism is widely used to rationalize, let's say, "frugality."

BMW UK "co-engineered" it there, BMW USA "co-engineered" it here with Spectrol.
Typical marketing, anybody willing to manufacture to BMW's spec and at the lowest price gets the "endorsement", what what that's worth.

Castrol had agreed to supply BMW with oil for an fraction of its cost- in return for "recommendation". Shame as I am uneasy in ever again using Castrol. In words of BMW Dealer : "with time we do recommend oils as in progress of development..." fair play! just wander as what manufacturer was favorite at the time of bike development.
Can not remember oil manufacturer being HD, but that is what old manual says...
