My new R1100S BX

I am so excited! I just bought my first BMW motorcycle and it happens to be a brand spankin' new R1100S Boxer Cup edition. I rode a standard 'S' demo model a month or two ago and liked it a lot. However, the sport suspension on my SBX feels killer, not too harsh, not too soft, really direct feel... I really like it. I'm coming from the land of sport bikes; A '96 Kawa ZX-11 and an '89 Suzuki Katana 750. What a difference. I like the screaming top end performance of the sport bikes, but the 'S' just has so much more character, great low RPM torquey power and awesome looks.

My only foible with the SBX is that the raised rear of the bike, due to the shorter paralever arm and the sport suspension, puts me in a constant slow slide towards the tank. Anyone have any recommendations on seats? I've generally liked the Corbins on my previous bikes, and have heard good things about Rich's Custom Seats in Seattle.

Also, are any of you in the Bellingham, WA region? I'd dig finding some more BMW oriented people to ride with. Thanks.

I saw this on the IBMW site & thought you might be interested. BeemerJohn also has a seat listed in the "for sale" section here.

I have a 2001 Lite version with the same suspension set up you have. I like my seat, but a lot of that opinion has to do with what I'm wearing. In leather it's great, in jeans it's less than admirable.

You'll love your S!

I would highly recommend Rich's since you are in the general area. He's not cheap, but will work with you until it is right.

try not setting so far back and hug the tank

instead of putting yourself, weight, ass, etc to the rear scoot up and get into a more wrapped around the bike position...i think you will find that position good in regards to comfort, control and does away with the slide. i normally slide back on long hauls or just need to readjust my rear for comfort. like on a long stretch i put my feet on the rear pegs...

I agree with Repoe3. I have a Corbin seat and I only use it when taking passengers. It is a very high quality construction and looks great, but sits too flat for me. Leaning into the bike gives me a much better feeling of control. I much prefer the stock seat, but I would like to try the Wunderlich.

Welcome to our little group. Hang up your jacket and have a 'seat'.

Can you believe it Motoman. A silver Boxer Cup S. Brand new with 5.5in rim, steering damper, taller shock for $11995 MSRP. Course, no ABS or case mounts.
.
Is this BMW way of dropping prices to move product?

That's what I'm thinkin' PD...

I know you love a bargain, but Don't do it!!

I'm thinkin' BMW has a ton of 11XX Boxer engines now that they've cross-pollinated the R1150R, R1150RT, R1150RS. This has dramatically decreased their tooling and manufacture costs, and hopefully our consumer aftermarket parts costs. They can crank these babies out 24x7.

The S is outclassed on most levels, so their new weapon is price.

Yeah, we paid more but can't imagine becoming an new S owner at this late date... I'd rather just buy used... $9K?

I'm keepin mine, and waitin' on www.RBRacing-rsr.com for my Turbo. Yum!

Used S

I was originally looking for a used S, but I had to make the choice:

a 3 year old bike with ~10,000 miles on it for 9 - 10 grand + tax and licensing and probably no warranty, plus without the wide wheel and sport suspension...

OR

a brand new bike with no miles, the wide wheel I want, the sport suspension I want, a 6 year unlimited mileage warranty, and in the silver color I like for a mere $3,500 more (tax included)

Tax = 8.6% in the Seattle region so.... $10,000 used S = $10,860 with tax + what $600 or $700 dollars for the wide wheel = $11,500 + how much for sport suspension... at least $600 but probably more + install = ~$12,300. That makes for roughly a $1,000 - $1,500 dollar difference after the install of heated grips on the SBX.

And still the cost wouldn't include a warranty and it would have a used petina... Barring the lack of the ABS I found it to be a no brainer.

I've put on 370 miles in the past 24 hours on the back roads around Bellingham, WA and am enjoying myself immensely. The sport suspension is definitely firm, but not harsh by any means... and that wide rear wheel floating under the bike looks better every time I look at it.

Hey... what are you guys doing to keeps the fins in the head clean? Q-Tips? This bike has a lot of little nooks and crannies that get dirtied!

I'm already planning my US / Canada trip for this summer... I'm so excited.

OK Johnny. Welcome. You've come to the right place!

Most members here will be glad to help you out. I would suggest you employ the Search function often, because you are arriving a bit late, and you will find that most of your questions have already been discussed at length, and you will save them the time of replying.

I myself am not the most patient or polite member, so you will want to express your thoughts in a reasonably clever way, so that I will be amused. I'm in Portland, in case you get down this way... I ride to B.C. occasionally.

6 year Warranty? Really. Is that extra?

For cylinder fin cleaning, you will want to pick up some of BMW Part No. 025-66-107-01 - 'doppelganger wipen mit drecken'.

Ride Safe!

P.S. Once you go Black you never go Back.

Very unusual to get a 6-year warranty for no additional cost. The Boxer cup is a great buy. I especially like that they went back to the clip ons being below the cross member like on the 99's. Defintely more sportier.
.
But OTOH the ABS has saved my arse a couple of times. I don't know what kind of a price you can put on this. Sorry, like a lot on this board I ride my S year-around since theres no second car in the garage.
.
The silver looks good, only cause its different but the black has the most menacing looking.

I was in a constant slide towards the tank. Having good luck with Corbins before I bought the Smuggler (see pic) for the S. Tremendous improvement... plus a little storage area.

Got my non-ABS '01 last July for $12,900. TBR pipes and the seat are the mods. I'm set for now and having a great time. You'll enjoy your new S.

Steve

One trick you can employ Johnny to lessen your bums slow slide toward the tank , with the stock seat , is to put rubber blocks as spacers in the front seat mount. The idea was posted here some time back . I cut the spacers from a radiator hose and glued them in place in the cupped recess of the seat mount . It does have the effect of increasing the gaps underneath and at the tank end between seat and body work . To the super fussy owner it does mess with the bikes original lines ever so slightly. These gaps are proportional to the thickness of the spacers used .I think it made a very positive improvement in my case . When sratchin I use my knees to minimise sliding forward at crucial times .

Welcome , and congratulations on your choice of bike.

Mick .

I tend to like the inner beauty of things. (except for women) Thats why I enjoy kicking back and looking at the fine engineering that went into our bikes. But for the life of me I can't figure out why our rear hugger is so big or why they didn't cover the motronics unit. But its a well hung bike so I'll keep it around.

Yea, but who can be the first person to identify all the misplaced, unsecured parts. And where are they on the bike???? If they are on the bike.?
.
I'll start off by giving everyone a hint. The fairing and seat are off and not on the bike. (actually behind the bike, but only I know this)
.
.
....now back to playing with my adult dolls.
