Gas Tank Eyelit threads stripped

Hi,

I did the job this weekend of replacing the throttle cables and Bowden box, and all went fine with the cables. But when I went to button the gas tank back up, the right side was stripped. This is the side where the threads are part of an eyelet coming off the tank (as opposed to the left side which uses a clip on the bike. I don't mean they were cross-threaded, I mean they were completely gone. Ground to metal dust shavings. I had noticed the bolt was loose when I took the tank off, but didn't notice the complete lack of threads until I went to re-bolt it.

Maybe it was not torqued up right last time and the vibrations basically ground the threads off? Has anyone else had this happen? (I tried searching and found nothing, but it is a hard thing to search for).

I ended up grinding off the threaded receiver and holding a bolt behind the eyelet to mount the tank this time.

-Tom

I had that problem on my R11S. Ijust tapped it with a 1mm increase and inserted the appropriate hex key bolt.

R111s - I didn't take a pic and the bike is now back together. I just checked the online parts diagrams and they also don't have a good view of this. But I am talking about the receiver for the right side bolt that mounts the tank to the frame. The bolt goes through a bush in the frame and is threaded into an eyelet (or whatever the proper term is) on the tank itself. The threads in the eyelet were completely disintegrated. Just silver powder left.

Nail24 - I was concerned about tapping it out because I was concerned the that there wasn't the wall depth to handle it. Guess I was wrong. That would have been easier.

. . by the way, as to the underlying project, the change of throttle cables made a huge difference in feel! I don't know if it is because the other cables were old, the box was gummed up or because of the new way the cable attaches to the throttle, or all three, but the feel is now much lighter and more controllable.

install new eyelet

on the left side is a clipnut, but as you say the right is threaded into the aluminum frame

the tab is large enough you could drill it out and install a nutsert, you really can't go much bigger because you would still want to retain the use of the rubber bushing with the inner metal collar.
