Question What tank bag do you use?

Hi all,

I need a tank bag for the S that isn't too big - something that can hold my wallet/sunglasses/cell phone/PDA etc, and that has a map pocket on top.

What do you use? How does it work? If you have pics or links, please post 'em.

TY,
JAS

Eric:
I'm using the Marsee 14-liter bag which I thought was the best compromise size bag for holding personal stuff like you mentioned. That was until I saw Dr. John's 15-liter Marsee teardrop bag which fits awesome on the S. They're both shown on this link

http://www.marseeproducts.com/page/tankbg3.html

Rex Marsee and crew are great folks to deal with too. I used to have a set of saddlebags for the Buell which needed repairs and the Marsee folks hooked me right up at very reasonable rates. You're gonna pay more but you're looking at an American product made right and you can talk to the top man if you've got a problem. Try that with a BMW bag.

Marsee 14 liter, me too.

Bag is about 6 liters unexpanded. My criteria was the ability to fit a large full face helmet in expanded mode - the 14 liter can do it. The BMW bag can just about take a small helmet.

Have had the Marsee 15 litre teardrop bag for more than a season and still think it is great. Fine quality for the money. Fit is great. Reflective material really shows up at night. Optional handle pocket is handy for keeping extra glasses handy and separate without digging into other sections of the bag. Lots of neat little features eg. flip out change purse for tolls on inside of main compartment.

Question

You guys that use tank bags have you had any problems with paint scuffing from straps or bag. It seems no matter how careful you are after time it dulls the paint.

I'm using the BMW bag. It's quirky, but it is custom made for the eebike, fits perfectly, and doesn't mark the paint in any way. I also like the zip-out extender. The map pocket is almost worthless.

RKA "Mini-Sport". Just big enough for all those "goodies" and will expand to "swallow" a vest or sweatshirt. Fits the tank on the "S" very well too. Good quality at a reasonable price.

Bagster tank bag w/ tank cover. I have the same "special edition" color as you, and the cover matches pretty well. It also protects the sides of the tank from leather scuffing. I used to have an RT and used a revpack tankbag which was a nice little no-frills bag...and cheap. hth

Marsee 20L Tear Drop -- Beautiful bag, holds lots of groceries when expanded, great construction, holds my EZ-Pass hidden, my Rio 600 nicely and whatever else I want.

bmw tank bag works great, looks good, and you can strap it as a backpack if necesarry. map pocket works fine- I don't know what markjenn is refering to... I don't think the smuggler is as usefull as it should be. not enough space, and forget about passengers all for too much money.

RKA.

Also have a matching tailbag, trunkbag, and their first ever brand-new model expanding Sportbike saddlebags. (not the little 33 liter ones, these are bigger!)

Love 'em all.

Tank Bags?

I usually go for the BM Bag as the fit and function are beyond reproach but after having the use of one for a 99 Cape Breton trip I didn't like the size and the $ of the S version. Hence, well into my 4th season with the S I'm still without a Tankbag. I have an RKA tailbag that I can use but not when the camping gear is packed over the rear seat which is the norm for most any ride more than a day in length. I've seen the Marsee bags on bikes and although the build quality looks good the bag sitting atop of a Mandarin S at this years Battle Creek Mini Rally sat on the tank cover like it was a fedora on Fred Astaires head! Anyone out there with a 15 litre Teardrop got any comments on how well this bag attaches and stays put, really put. Thanks Steve

I purchased an Eclipse Tanktote for sport bikes when I picked up my S. I would not recommend this bag for the S as it does not fit the S well at all. The bag tends to slip to one side or the other. Also, the map pocket is pretty useless and tends to come undone at high speeds on windy days. The marring on the paint finish has been fairly minimal and works out with some good polish and elbow grease.

For those of you with knowledge of such things, does anyone know where I can get the extension for the BMW tank bag? I bought my S used and it came with the tanks bag sans the extension. The local dealer told me it was unavaliable. I was thinking of sending a few emails out to the bigger dealers.
Anybody have one they don't need?
Thanks,
John

I'm looking for a tank bag and found this thread using the search feature. It's fairly old.

Any new bags out there? Anyone with a photo of a 15L Marsee tear drop bag installed on the bike? That's the bag I'm leaning towards. Thanks.

I'm using the Roadgear 3-point Sport Tank Bag. It's small (8W x 13L x 6-9H) and holds 11-14 liters worth of gear. I went small because, like you, I carry just the basic essentials when using a tank bag. It mounts securing, doesn't slide (soft rubber base), and has never marked the tank. It works for me....
