Howling at 3100rpm in 5th/6th -- Tranny, engine, or otherwise?

So I ride with earplugs so much that I have no clue when this started and how noticeable it's been. I had this weird hope for it to be just the alternator belt. Doesn't seem like that's the case. But the resonance of the howl is pretty bad at 3100 rpm in 5th and 6th. It may be howling in other gears, but I'm not certain.

141K miles. She's due and owes me nothing. I don't really want to break into it. I sort of promised it new cam-chains at 100K and that didn't happen.

Is there a common tell-tale for if my main bearings are going or if it's the tranny?

Knowing your history, Chris... I supposed there is a deer stuck in there somewhere... or a vulture.

3100 rpm in 5th and 6th gear? I'd be howling too.
