r1200s license plate bracket bending

I'm reposting this picture from a year ago because I was pm'd by another r1200s owner asking if I'd experienced bending of the plate bracket.

The answer is yes and I think there are a few other owners that have had this problem.

Yes, twice now, just like that. Must be those midwest railroad tracks or something that really compresses the suspension. For a second there I imagined I pushed Mary's S through a curve with my bike and bent it. Ha Ha Ha. Don't think so.

Bent plate

Ya mine did the same thing. I guess that Ohlins really travels. I have taken off the reflector but now my plate is bent on right bottom corner.

I used a cut-off wheel and cut my lower reflector off. Now it looks as if it was never there. Much cleaner looking in my opinion.

MIne did the same thing after a 'spirited' ride on some less than four star roads. I cut off the offending piece and touched up the bare metal with some black paint. A little more pre-load prehaps? . . . or a little less pasta . . .

BMW should redesign the part and issue a recall. Technically, it's a safety issue. Besides, it's ridiculous that the tire touches a fixed part of the bike. Ridiculous.

Under the right circumstances it could puncture the tire I would think. we've seen stranger things with tires on the boards. I'm going to have to rethink leaving that reflector on although apparently without it the license plate can also make contact. If a safety issue, we should forward to NTSB.

They may do that to us first. This is the same company that has thousands of plastic fuel couplers out there that are just waiting to burn US at the stake so to speak. How about a recall on those too ! Maybe this explains my reluctance to give them a pass on a fluke bracket hazard. Too bad I really like the bikes.

Actually I copied JonM and I'm going to modify mine as well. It occupies a lot of airspace. Photo in a minute......

OK, now that this has happened to me, this is complete bullsh#t and unacceptable...

Riding a fast and bumpy road I dismount about an hour later to see this!

So to comply with some federal regs some stupid reflectors are necessary that could potentially cut/puncture the tire and lead to an accident. Brilliant!

Completely folded mine over and f#@ked up my license plate.

Do yourself a favor and trim those silly things off or replace the holder.

Wow! How did the plate bracket bend that far onto your tyre and not break?

Haven't a clue. I was worried that I may have damaged some of the other brackets/hardware connecting to the muffler. Thank goodness everything else appears to be OK.

I have a used Evoluzione plate holder that I recently acquired that will be going on immediately after getting a new license plate. How bad are the Evoluzione plate holders in terms of breaking/cracking? I read that there are issues with them as well and that the stock turn signals should not be used. Correct?

Lol.

Before the darn thing vibrated off on a twisy road in NC last year, mine looked the same way ! Yeah, I guess the tire bumps it.

I replaced my entire missing bracket with another BMW tag bracket from some other model. Looks great. Lighter.
