Might sell my bike
I,m thinking about buying a new bike. My question is what do you think my bike is worth? I have a 2000 R1100S with 22000 miles. Bags, new tires, normal use . It has some marks on the right valve cover. The Harley dealer offered me 3800

Sounds about right for a trade in... Ball park for selling outright would be $4500
Kelly blue book and NADA have online pricing tools.

It's heat stroke, not making you think straight. Man you guys are getting baked in the Midwest. As soon as it cools off the urge will pass.

Which H-D are you considering? Bill's right. They won't give you more than they can quickly move that foreign bike to a local dealer for. Unless they are like the Dealer in Grand Junction that sells BMW's and Harley's under the same roof.

I started out with a Harley Evo Custom Softtail. A piece of crap. The alternator went out at 8k miles and had to fight the dealership to get it warranty repaired. Then the overrruning starter unit went out, same warranty fight. Bike out of duty for over 4 weeks both times. Then, the rear base cylinder gasket started weeping, then pouring 4 thousand miles after the warranty expired, even though I had pointed it out repeatedly to the dealer. He said they all did it. Fixed it, bought a BMW and never looked back.

Damn. I am in Boone, IA, and would be interested, if I had the cash.
Is your bike yellow? I think I saw you riding near Jordan Creek a couple of weeks ago, when taking my wife shopping. Seeing an R1100S was the highlight of the day for me. Last edited by BoxerFanatic; 07-08-2012 at 11:22 AM.. |

I,m having some problems with my knee. And I thinking that the S may not be helping. I went and had a MRI the other day and the doc saw me ride up on my bike. He didn't really like the way I was setting on the bike. Told me that wasn't helping. The harley shop was just down the road so I stopped in for ****s and jiggles to see what he would give me for it. Have not given up on my S yet hold on. But that Switchback EVO is a pretty nice bike for the price and has a lot of things going for it. Removable bags and windshield 2 year warranty . And if anybody wants to give me 4500 its sold.

I hate to do this and get everyone worked up but here goes.
First, I like BMW's. I have four of them now and I've had several over my riding time. I've bought 6 new BMW's in the last 11 years. I also have many other bikes of about every brand out there and I ride most of what I have. I like the performance characteristics of the BMW. I also very much like the performance characteristics of some of the Harley Davidsons. There's nothing like a 45 degree, single throw Big Twin. There is little comparison between a BMW and a Harley Davidson. They offer two totally different riding experiences. I cannot argue with anyone who reports a specific problem they have had with an individual bike but I can say this. Over the last 10 years, the Harley models are far superior to any BMW I have owned as far as maintenance and reliability. To say otherwise is a joke. Think about all the BMW bs that so many BMW owners deal with. Final drive failures, fuel pump controller failures, antenna ring strandings, fuel gauge sensors failures, transmission shaft breakage, abs pump failures and many more all-to-frequent maladies plague the BMW marque. Remember the front page article in recent years published by Motorcycle Consumer News ? "BMW- A Tarnished Image ?? " It's true. I've had most of the problems noted above with just about ALL BMW's I've owned. My Harleys (that I use for long distance) have been bullet-proof. I've never had any problem with them. Their reliability, dependability, dealer support and factory support is so far ahead of BMW these days, that they are not even in the same league. All you do is change the oil and ride them. Nothing ever happens to them. Reject the Harleys if you don't like what they do. However, don't fall victim to bs myths about H-D reliability and dependability problems, especially if you are a BMW rider ! lol Good lord. |

Why do the Harley VS BM comparison? For 20 years Hondas have been more reliable! For 15 years Triumph has had outstanding engineering and reliability. Is the Fjr or the Concourse as good as BMWs ?I think so! But without the standard that BMW set the competitors wouldn't be the machines they are.

I have 3 friends with fairly new Harleys, and 3 problems: starter failure, rear base cylinder leakage and alternator failure. My 2003 S has gone 38k miles without a single issue. Guess there's some good ones out there, and bad ones, but to me, Harley is a piece of crap. If someone gave me a new one, I'd sell it immediately.

P.S. And, none of the 3 will outrun my dad's Caddy CTS. Not even close.

Round 3
I,m not into loud pipes or chrome. Did that in the 70s. I have had 2 Harleys and 3 BMWs. The Harley I had was a blast riding bar to bar, the Beemers are great for city to city. But that has all changed in the last 30 years. Harley is making a good bike these days and BMW is getting to the point that I can't get the cash to buy one. I read this web site everyday and there seems to be just as many people pissing and moaning about BMW as Harley ever had. All bikes it don't seem to matter what kind all have there problems and there are good ones also. I say ride and have a good time doing it. I won't quit going to Beemer rallies if I buy a Harley but the BS I have given to the Harley riders over the last 30 years will come back to bite me in the ass I know that for a fact.
If the guys that say there dealer fight them over warranty work get a new dealer there not all like that. BMW has a few crappy dealers also. I can think of 2 myself. I can't think of a better bike then my 1100S but my knee might make me change riding stiles and I can't come up with the cash to get a new R1200RT I can a Harley . They are willing to deal around here. |

To get back on track to the original question, seems to be quite a number of low mileage S-bikes on the market recently. I just purchased a low miles R1150GS, so I started viewing nationwide ads for S-bikes to assess asking prices if I decide to sell rather than keeping as Garage Art. For example, this 2002 in SoCal in apparently nice condition is available for "$5000 or best". Interestingly to me, the seller states same reasons as you (and me too) for selling or at least replacing with something with more suitable ergos for aging bodies...

what the hell here we go again
I got this bike from a former BMW dealer in Des Moines. ( he was one of the dealers that told BMW go take a flying leap when they wanted him to build a new store) Like Neds in Riverside Iowa. He sold it to me because of his legs also.
