Thinking about a Custom Exhaust Setup
I have owned my BCR for nearly a year now and I have run it with both the stock exhaust and the full Ztechnik Ti system. Most of the time I prefer the sound of the Ti system better, but it leaves me wanting a little more of a louder, deeper exhaust tone. One of my riding buddies runs an Arrow exhaust on his Monster 1000 S2R and I really like how that bike sounds. Has anyone attempted a custom setup with either Arrow or Akrapovic mufflers with a catless midpipe?
The sound in this video is more or less what I would like to achieve. I believe the setup is from a Ducati 996, not sure of the brand of the system though. beemertje draait weer - YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgq2aAeWXmg&feature=related |
Probably start with this cat eliminator
BMW R1100S Cat Eliminator Pipe [CA-00011] - $120.00 and possibly a set of cans comparable to these |
Might consider a pc3 & get it dynoed as you have no idea how they will run together. Sometimes you will lose power with a system that hasn't been tuned together & if it flows better than stock it can run extremely lean at certain rpm's. Most aftermarket pipes that work will require remapping to some extent.
|
I understand that a re-tune of some fashion will be required, as I have felt that the Ztech system has felt lean without any compensation. I have been bouncing back and forth between the Techlusion, PCIII, Wunderlich controller, and BBP chip. My problem is, there is no general consensus that any of them work well on the 'S'. Some people love certain ones and others hate them, so I find it very hard to decide who to trust, and being that I live in the desert and AZ/CA only pump 91 octane fuel, a lean mixture scares the crap out of me.
Right now it is still all just ideas in my head. I am not expecting a significant increase in power, I would just like a smooth, safe running bike with a more aggressive exhaust note. Any help/advice/opinions are always welcome. |
Laser system and chip combo works well, sounds great.
but it will be a struggle to get any bike to sound as good as a Duc. care to explain what lower octane has to do with lean running concerns? |
A lower octane rating has a lower resistivity to burn, and under a lean condition with an air/oil cooled bike in 100-115 degree ambient heat the fear of pre-ignition/detonation is significantly increased.

Vanderlinde or Staintune both have good sounds. Not too loud, but nice and throaty.

My '01 with a full Remus sounds very good, better than my 996 with full Arrow except the 996 backed down with much better sound.
The cat off Remus makes this bike run better than any of my previous R11's, smooth all the time. |
Ditto the Remus sounds real good--Raspy starting 3.5-4 RPM..I had 2Bros cat elim.the stainless on the remus was superior to the finish on the up pipes.. The ECU worked fine with no additional mapping-tho bike had SJ induct and K&N-that might be important!
Nice to have 2 free flowing pipes all the way to the back, I guess theres only one up pipe with stock Cat . |
Len Willis (Paulaner) has a ZTechnic on his 11s (I think) with dual resonators on the way up to the cans. It sounds awesome, and I like it much better than my Laser.

The full Ztechnik Ti system is a single midpipe (no cat, with 1 resonator) and a 2 muffler set up. Don't get me wrong, I think it makes a beautiful sound.... I would just like a slightly deeper, louder exhaust note. Maybe I should see what a midpipe without a resonator and the Ztechnik mufflers sounds like first.

Found a few pictures and some information on the bike shown in the videos I posted. The bike was built by a Dutchman, forum name Suzrgv800. He used Termignoni mufflers from a Ducati 916. He made custom headers that go to a dual pipe to the two cans. Looks and sounds excellent (I think so anyways). Also notice the rear wheel was adapted to a Ducati style hub.

Really nice he has a talent with metal. Notice also the radial mount brembos & front wheel set up, custom rearsets & fairings.

I just got mine out of the shop today, and the difference in sound between yours and mine is pretty significant. Your Laser is more like Flowmasters (NASCAR), while my Ztek sounds more like fruity old 'Turbo' mufflers. I'm the only one that notices the difference, though. Everyone else thinks our bikes look and sound exactly the same! Single resonator in the up pipe, btw. SmileWavy |

Mine is pretty dang loud...... sets off car alarms all the time. |
Those crazy Dutch..

The front fairing looks gruesome. I admire the guy's skills, but not that bit.

And the tail--Buy that bike put stock front fairing and rear cowling on and you'll have a classic that sounds good and has radial mounted brake rotor and radial tires, too.

I'd heard that Arrow (Italy) is the supplier for Z-Technic but can't confirm it. I have the Z-Technic System and like it mainly for the reduced weight (1/2 OEM parts) as well as the nice sound during decel.
I agree that nothing is going to make a Boxer Twin sound like a 90 Degree V-Twin (the most intoxicating sound in motorcycling IMO). As for a richer mixture I put on a Bosch O2 Sensor (Bosch P/N: 13474) and noted my bike consumed more fuel than Swartzy's on a trip to Colorado a few years ago. I average ~43 MPG running premium and altitudes around here of 300-600 Feet. |
