Best way to pack and ship R12S muffler?

I want to sell my dust-collecting, shelf-space-sucking R12S muffler to Beemerboneyard, but feel like cross-country shipping is gonna kill me. Is there any cheap and easy way to do this?

Hie thee down to your friendly neighborhood bicycle store and beg a bicycle box from them. They are usually double-wall corrugated cardboard, nice and sturdy, and just the right size for many exhaust components. On your way home stop at Lowes and buy a sheet of 2 x 8 x 2 inch rigid foam insulating board. Cut it to fit the bicycle box with a razor knife, poke holes in it and zip tie the exhaust to the foam board so it won't bang around in there. Use the rest of the foam to protect and pad it.

GET YOUR OWN UPS ACCOUNT. Those PakMail places are a total ripoff. UPS Ground.

N., also purging

Box it up well and send it via Greyhound bus. They typically crush USPS, UPS and FedEX with respect to cost.

Also the bus lines will ship a refridgerator size carton 30" x 30" x 80" where as some of the others will send you to a freight company.

I don't think the buyer is gonna go pick it up at the Greyhound depot, though I will ask about that. I have a UPS account, might have them come get it.

USPS is relatively low cost if you are under the girth measurement. Are you hopping the whole system or just the muffler?

see if beemerboneyard will give you their account number so you can just pack it up, and print a label on them and send it. They are bound to have an account with UPS or FeDex.

It's just the muffler I'm shipping, but that damn pipe is long and at a weird angle. I measured it yesterday and I'd need a box that is around 40x30x30. BB won't let me ship on their account. I just need to find or build a box and then have UPS come pick it up.

Damn, that's a big box, and you're going to get hammered on dimensional weight. Off to UHaul with you, then to Lowes for rigid foam.

I would just wrap the hell out of it with bubble wrap and clear packing tape, take it to UPS, and see what they say.

The boneyard must be paying you a pretty penny for it, you must be quite the sales guy Rick, considering it is the ugliest OEM muffler known to man.

Not the answer to your question, but back in the 1980's I was coming back from Germany with a friend who had purchased new mufflers for his R100 (USD to DM exchange rate was good back them) and packed them in a large duffle bag for the flight home. After we checked in he was paged to come to security immediately or his luggage would be destroyed. Apparently a BMW R100 muffler in a duffle bag looks a lot like a pipe bomb when x-rayed.
