Shorai batteries rock!

Just came in for my KTM 300 xc...man this think is light, 20.5 oz. Feels like a fake showroom model. I might even become a pom-pom waiver. I guess that is what you do when you like something..lol. Lane

Ditto, I bought one for my mostly neglected DRZ and I was amazed at how light it is, and how well it spins it. That KTM is an awesome machine Lane.

Thanks Nils...it is a fun bike...it has made me a better rider for sure. I see you have a drz, I just rode one 2 weeks ago. I just bought a klr 650..(has a 6 gal. tank...love that) and was on a dual sport ride with a guy on a drz 400. He wanted to swap for while...the drz is a great bike too...it was a nice break from the hog...its very nimble for a dual sport. I am trying to find the sweet spot in the 650 range. It is one of themost difficult things I have ever tried to do. I really the klr. Its soft and slow....but a fun little bike...that is very simple...still looking for the Swiss army knife in the mid-size.

Be safe,
Lane

Don't those things catch fire? Or have been known to do so?

I think they all can catch fire. My sister had a 740i with a regular lead acid battery that exploded....made a mess. The kind of riding I do I am much more worried about putting a bone through my skin than this bat. Catching fire.

Read some of that TM. I wonder about the source...is it from a B tier supplier to the battery industry or someone that had one fail. I don`t know....I think with as many out there on bikes and alot of bikers connected to the large forums..you would hear about more of them failing or catching fire. I think there is a risk with any battery...or anything electric. There is a house in my Hood that burned to the ground (they where out of town) the cause was a surge protector for the TV. You bring up a valid point though.. A buddy of mine is a UPS pilot and they lost a 747 last year in the middle east due to a pallet of Lit. batteries catching fire...so it can happen. He heard the CVC from the plane...very scary and very sad...they knew the were dead for a while..very sad.

Definitely not posted as bible material but I thought some of the chemistry and electronics might give us some insight.

Mine is working fine. 18AH in an R1200S after a 14AH that was almost a year failed on one trip to light all up (bike would run but no headlamp).

Got one for my R11S a while ago. Works great. The weight savings was incredible. Something like 12 pounds lighter than my Odyssey 680. Made the other battery feel like it was filled with lead...oh wait it is filled with lead. Noticeably lighter handling feel too. I like it.

I think the article that Tony linked is valid and some of the points discussed are referred to in Shorai's literature. The only salient objections to this particular battery technology are readily solved by electronics embedded right into the battery. Shorai's have some type of electronics on board, but I don't know if they avoid all potential charging pitfalls. Mine works flawlessly thus far and is much better than the stock battery ever was at starting the bike.

Heck, I had my HP2 Sport OEM battery die after 10 months... so sometimes Lead Acid is just as bad as it can be.

Hey, I'm not trying to discourage usage, just thought I'd post something I found that's a bit more info than "wow, this thing is light, man". I want all you guys to use these so the next time I need to replace a battery, the technology has gotten a little better.

The weight decrease is nice, but it would probably be better for me to shed the weight by skipping lunch.

The LiPE batteries do better in warmth.

Georrgyutss....this is a motorcycle forum. Just make sure your cooler is full of beer and everything will be ok. Thats how I roll when I fish. Or get a 2x12 and cut it down to 26 inches...that will hold you and the batteries.

Good luck!
