Practically Non-Existent Rear Brake R1200
 

I have a new to me R1200S. The back brake is practically non-functional. It will slow the bike, but only with a fair amount of effort.

Is that a function of the ABS, or do I need to perform a pedal adjustment, or something else. Pads looks good.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Do a search for the werner mod. Basically the pivot point of the rear brake binds up. The werner kit takes care of the problem. For now you could disassemble , clean, lubricate and when putting it back together watch not to make it to tight. I noticed on mine when doing the upgrade that as soon as I loosened the bolt a drop the rear brake worked.

Brakes? Pfft! All brakes do is slow you down.

I am not sure if the previous owner of my bike installed the Werner mod but he gave me the old bush that he had removed. Man did the BMW engineers really cheap out on that design.:rolleyes:

My rear brake works great now and while naturally it is far less effective than the front, it works as best as could be expected for a rear brake.

Honestly it happened so far I don't even remember if I hit my brakes or not. I had just gotten on the highway too, less than a mile beforehand! I just remember hearing screaching tires and by the time I started to look over to my left, sideways truck into and over my car. Yikes!

We're working on getting the next batch made and sent over now.
The shop Werner makes them at a bit backed up right now, but it IS in progress.

How does this happen with a modern manufacturing co.? I am sure there is a brake dept. how could the engineer that designed this brake never try iy out, or anyone else?

I am in for one of these kits also.

I haven't tried stomping on mine with the ABS on or off but in just the first hundred "new to me" miles on the bike the rear seems fine. The nutso thing is the front or maybe I should say the lack of front end dive when hard on the front brake, too weird! Still haven't figured out how to set up for corners properly, no thread hijack intended, just a comment.

I think that's a big reason why the magazine reviewers all complain about lack of feel with telelevered BMWs under braking. But back to the topic, even before the Werner mod, the rear brake on my R1200S is better than my new-to-me Ducati 996. The local mechanic says even when perfectly adjusted and bled, the rear still doesn't work well. He said Ducati's answer is "why are you using the rear brake?"

LOL Mike, I'm so use to track days on my now sold GSXR rear brake really never enters my mind unless I'm waiting at a light or on gravel/loose stuff. I know some of the guys in the old FJ group use to actually induce a bubble into the rear brake to make it a little more numb and less prone to lock. Not sure about my Hyper, don't use it much either:D

Tried just the rear brake only to slow down and not much helpful to reduce speed. Amazingly, even ABS engaged before I noticed much slow down. But I like the way it is to rely more on the front.

If your ABS was activating then you where at max rear brake. I really thought the back brake was for trail braking and holding the bike at a stop light. On the dirt I use a lot of front...I have seen guys plow into guys going down a big hill because they won`t get on the front....I routinely stop on big down hills if there is a jam up and have had guys slid by me out of control.
