ABS brake fluid flush

I did a brake fluid flush on my 2001 S recently. I went to the extra effort of pulling the tank and bleeding the ABS modulator as well. Good thing, this is what came out of the modulator

Many posts in several forums had advised to flush the modulator as well as the master cylinder to caliper circuits to ensure that all of the gunk is flushed out. If you have ABS and have not done this, I highly recommend it. On the 02-04 with Whizzy brakes this is even more critical. My 02 RT had a modulator fail, likely due to never having been flushed by the previous owner for the first 6 years. I am a believer that this is cheap insurance.

I just flushed my entire brake and clutch systems and found some of the same. The manual claims that this is a dealer only procedure but I had no issues.

In fact, I was surprised to discover that my R1200S did not have bleed nipples under the fuel tank. I successfully flushed the entire system from the reservoir to the calipers and the brakes feel awesome.

That brake fluid really doesn't look all that bad. I've seen way, way worse. I alternate between ATE Blue and Gold so I can see when the old stuff is really out. Of course, I do it often enough that it usually looks new coming out.

You can flush the entire system without bleeding at the pump separately as Kurt says, but it's nice to bleed at the pump anyway just to get any air out of it. I'm always glad to do these hydraulic fluid swaps.
