Front wheel bearing removal
Has anyone removed the front wheel bearing? I am going to get my front wheel powder coated and the local vendor says it will have to come out before they can do it. How hard of a job is it to remove and replace with another? Do I need special tools for removal or installation of the new bearing?

Put your finger inside, you'll feel one bearing is double the thickness of the other, take the narrower one out first, you'll need a screwdriver or drift to knock the spacer to one side, then just place the drift ontop of the spacer and knock the spacer and bearing out, turn the wheel over and knock the double thickness one out.

Chris, Thanks for the reply. Your instructions sound wickedly easy... Maybe I missed something because this has been a pain in the butt so far..When you refer to the spacer, you are referring to the tube that sets between the two bearings??

Yes,the problem is always dislodging, you have to cock it over to get a drift on the edge of the tube, the mistake folks make is being to gentle

A straight punch works better than a tapered drift punch. I use a length of round stock. And as Chris said it sometimes takes a good blow to get them moving. Don't forget to move around the circumference to keep it from cocking.
Just remember the bearing is toast after removing it, it may feel good, but there will be flat spots that will cause it to self destruct if you try to use it.

If possible, use heat, lots of heat. I really had to get the torch going on my wheel for a bit before I could get the bearings to come out.

The Pit Posse bearing removal tool works great. Pit Posse Wheel Bearing Removal Sets PP1692 - PowerSportsPlace.com
I've used mine several times with no damage to the wheels. |

That spacer is "suspended" in the hub. I don't know how to explain it but you have to force your drift onto the inside lip of the bearing.

Do you replace the spacer as well? I think I ruined mine.

Not generally, but you usually don't damage them either.
